Path of Exile’s Necropolis League Brings A Wave Of New Changes
By Xandria Morden|March 22, 2024|0 Comment
If you’re a fan of action RPG Path of Exile and are still playing it right now, then you’ve probably been waiting to hear about the new league for some time.
Well, we’ve got good news: the Necropolis League is coming your way end of this month, with a whole bunch of changes and new content to keep our beloved game fresh.
In an exclusive interview with Game Directors Jonathan Rogers and Mark Roberts, we got to ask them how they got the idea behind the Necropolis theme.
“It’s honestly like, it’s very hard to actually say what the design process is. In the case of Necropolis, we started out with the mechanic. And then we had to try and find a theme, and we went through, like, honestly, we’ll just go through like 10 to 20 themes and just discuss different ideas, and then at some point we just land on one that we like. I honestly don’t remember exactly where the corpse burying and exhume, exhumation theme came from, but you know, it just seemed cool when we, when we, as soon as we thought about it, we were like, oh, this is a really awesome one, so, uh, that’s what we went with.” – Game Director Jonathan Rogers.
“We generally have a backlog of art that is unused. And then we happened to find this NPC that was this perfect, like graveyard caretaker vibe. And so we’re like, we’ll bind that to it. And then it just all went from there pretty much.” – Game Director Mark Roberts.
For a free-to-play game that has been out for several years now, it’s pretty darn amazing how well Path of Exile is doing to this day. Path of Exile was released in 2012, they had their beta in 2011. The developers stated they had seen how well the free-to-play games were doing well in Asia, and decided why not bring it to the West? And well, they built their success on it and still firmly believe in it.
Now, let’s talk about all the good stuff coming with this League.
Undertaker Arimor collects scattered spirits that have begun haunting the monsters of Wraeclast. He will provide you with a family heirloom called the Lantern of Armor that will help rid the spirits. Now this lantern will allow you to examine the spirits haunting the area you are in. By peering into the lantern, you will also get to adjust and manipulate which mobs are affected by which mods. Of course, as you reach higher levelled areas, the tier and number of spirits haunting Wraeclast will increase. The spirits roam around constantly, so if you get stuck at any point during the campaign, don’t worry, just wait a few minutes and peer through the lantern again, it will be different.
Not all spirits are malicious!!!
Sometimes these spirits aren’t even haunted, but are ‘devoted’. These can grant basic rewards like increased experience, and also bigger rewards like spawning the “Nameless Seer’, who is an NPC that can grant you a single unique item after you defeat all of the packs affected by that spirit. The more haunted monsters players defeat in the previous area before using your lantern, the more likely a ‘devoted’ monster will appear in the next area. Monsters who are haunted by higher tier spirits will also increase the chance of a ‘devoted’ to appear, so go on and try your luck, put the hardest modifier on the biggest pack! 😉
Monsters with unresolved anguish is another biiiiig reward you can get from this League. Once you slay these monsters, the undertaker will take extra care of these corpses and store them in the morgue. Once ready, you can visit the morgue and check out all the monsters you have collected, and then continue on to bury whichever you wish into one of the many graves.
Now here is where it gets interesting! Here you can create items you want/need. The corpses you collect all have a crafting effect on them. If you bury multiple corpses in the cemetery, all adjacent corpses can be exorcised at once to create one item. Not just that, all of the crafting effects will also apply to the same item.
You can also craft new and unique items which are exclusive to this league. Sometimes you can find corpses of eternal empire families, and once you bury the entire family together and exorcise them, they will gift you with a specific item to their lineage.
Another interesting tip, you can trade corpses with other players! Just purchase an empty coffin and place your corpse inside it!
Now each in-game map will allow you to manipulate it with the Lantern on the map device UI. It does not however cycle, but will be fixed permanently. Once you view the map through the lantern, you cannot remove it from the map device.
During this league, there will also be support for the Necropolis league on the Atlas passive tree. You will be allowed to enhance and customize the gameplay to your liking. This can also effect crafting!
Currently, the end game content that is the most satisfying and rewarding to do are the uber pinnacle bosses. The only way to access these bosses right now is to allocate specific keystones on the Atlas Passive Tree. Rewards and access to the non uber variance are economically priced around the rewards of the uber fights. This means that it is wasteful to run the non uber variance and instead to just sell them.
New changes are coming to this system! These keystones are going to be removed from the Atlas Tree and instead new fragments will be added to access this content. Where are we getting these fragments from? Well, say hello to:
TIER 17 MAPS
Uber Pinnacle bosses now have their own unique items, which means there is a reason to farm the non Uber and the Uber vision. Each of the bosses have two new unique items added to their drop pools.
The two main systems are being removed, which are sextants and the master mission selector. Scarabs have also been improved and reworked to include which of the options which have been included in those systems. Scarabs are also now all World Drops. Master Missions like Incursion, Delves, Beastiary and Betrayal are also now accessible from Scarabs. Best part? You can get ALL Masters to spawn on the same map.
However new keystones have been added!
New Notables have also been added!
This means you can now swap between Maps whenever you want! You can unlock up to 2 extra trees. You can also label your trees, so don’t worry!
We’re getting a bunch new transfigured gems!
There will also be a balance pass on the existing transfigured gems. One of the main gems they are currently looking at is Kinetic Bolt of Fragmentation. A new support gem called Sacred Wisps have been added to help classes that have been suffering from this gem. You get two attached wisps for a duration, and whenever you attack they have a chance to use the skill you are using as long as there are enemies within the area. If there is a Unique Boss, it will always proc.
It will trigger instant skills and war cries without having to bind to left click
You can now hold down CTRL + Left Click to automatically apply currency orbs until you get what you want.
You can now CTRL + SHIFT + Click, to transfer all your currency at once from your inventory into a trade.
When harvest crafting, the item hover will always be visible. This is so you no longer have to go back and forth to see the results of your crafts. You can also reroll Uber Elder fragments. Fragments dropped by the Shaper cannot be rerolled into fragments dropped by the Elder, and vice versa!
The upgrades for pantheon powers will now be applied to every character in the League. You will now no longer have to grind Divine Vessels on your new characters.
Aisling’s Crafting Bench is being removed as a reward. Veiled Orbs will now perform that function. They will remove a mod and replace it with a veiled mod. These orbs will now drop from Catarina and will no longer be a World Drop.
It will give random -/+ 10 quality. The capability to add extra quality to weapons, armours and flasks has been removed from Betrayal.
They can now be traded!
When you have completed witnessing all bosses required to go to the Maven’s Arena, go talk to Commander Kirac and he will open a map device window for you. Here, you can see the map invitation waiting for you already. Valdo’s Maps that gives invitations now rewards Scarabs.
With all of the exciting updates coming with the new League, which will be coming out 29th of March 2024, we’re excited to see if Path of Exile can stay atop their game rivalled against Diablo 4 and the latest ARPG release Last Epoch. This update will be one of their biggest after their last end game update with all the overhauls and quality of life changes we will be seeing.
Path of Exile is available on Steam, Epic Games Store, and Playstation/Xbox. You might want to clear out your hard disk space; it’s gonna be quite an install size.
