Star Wars Outlaws Unveils Look At Space Combat, Stealth & More Gameplay

During Ubisoft Forward June 2024, Ubisoft unveiled an extensive look at gameplay footage from the upcoming Star Wars Outlaws. Several weeks ago, we also received the opportunity to catch an exclusive briefing of even more gameplay footage; here’s what we learned about the game so far.

Gameplay-wise, Star Wars Outlaws looks like it plays similarly to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted games, with cover-based third-person shooter combat. There are multiple ammo types to choose from, including Ion ammo to neutralize shields and Stun ammo to well, stun, enemies.

Just like Uncharted, there are also similar platforming mechanics and sections. Players can use their grappling hooks to swing across and jump from ledge to ledge to navigate the environment. Of course, seeing as this is still a Ubisoft game, there’s a lot of stealth in Star Wars Outlaws. Players can use their animal companion, Nix, to distract enemies before silently taking them down.

Besides that, Star Wars Outlaws also features hacking and lockpicking minigames. There are quite a few lockpicking sections in the gameplay footage shown, so let’s hope that it doesn’t happen too often that it becomes an annoying chore.

However, the (arguably) most interesting part of the Star Wars Outlaws gameplay footage is the spaceship combat. It looks inspired by the dogfighting combat in the underrated Star Wars Squadrons game by EA Motive Studios, albeit seemingly more simplified. What actually shocked me was that players can control the Trailblazer (the name of the protagonist’s ship in Star Wars Outlaws) from space and enter a planet’s atmosphere in real-time before finally landing. That’s actually pretty impressive, especially considering that Starfield couldn’t do the same. If No Man’s Sky and Star Wars Outlaws can do it, why can’t Starfield? But I digress.

Star Wars Outlaws launches for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on 30 August 2024.
