Star Wars The Acolyte Episode 1 & 2 Breakdown & Easter Eggs
By Alleef Ashaari|June 5, 2024|0 Comment
The first two episodes of Star Wars The Acolyte is now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. Check out my spoiler-free review of Star Wars The Acolyte by heading over here.
The Acolyte is set in the High Republic era during the prime of the Jedi, around one hundred years before the events of Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace.
The Acolyte stars Amandla Stenberg (Bodies Bodies Bodies), Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game), Manny Jacinto (Nine Perfect Strangers), Dafne Keen (Logan), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), Rebecca Henderson (Inventing Anna), Charlie Barnett (Russian Doll), Dean-Charles Chapman (1917), and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix).
For more details on each character, the StarWarsLord is here to help.
The synopsis reads:
The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.
It follows an investigation into a crime spree that pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems.
Star Wars The Acolyte doesn’t start with the franchise’s iconic crawling text. That’s because the crawling text is usually reserved only for the Star Wars theatrical movies. That being said, at least Star Wars The Acolyte does still begin with a wall of text with the franchise’s signature font.
Within the first 10 minutes, Carrie-Anne Moss’ Jedi Master Undara is killed by the Acolyte assassin named Mae (played by Amandla Stenberg).
That was unexpected, considering that her character was heavily used in the marketing for the series.
There’s always a main droid of any Star Wars movie, show or game, and Star Wars The Acolyte is no exception.
The name of this droid is Pip, and her owner is Osha Aniseya, the twin sister of Mae (both characters are played by Amandla Stenberg).
A meknek is the Star Wars’ equivalent of a mechanic. However, it was only during the High Republic era that they were still using organic mekneks for ship maintenance. In the future that we’re familiar with from Star Wars Episode I A Phantom Menace onwards, astromech droids like the famous R2-D2 will be the only ‘mekneks’ because it’s deemed too unethically dangerous for organic beings to repair ships.
Also, it’s been a while since we saw Neimodians. These race of aliens were first introduced in Star Wars Episode I A Phantom Menace and they’re part of the Trade Federation.
Osha became a meknek after she left the Jedi Order.
Jedi Knight Yord Fandar is played by Charlie Barnett.
It’s interesting to see how different the Jedi’s official robes are during the High Republic era. They look more regal and elegant featuring capes, which fit the High Republic’s more optimistic and ‘peaceful’ era.
She lost her family (her mothers and sister) in a tragedy years ago. At this time, Osha is not aware that her twin sister, Mae, is still alive, which is why the Jedi suspects Osha of killing Master Indara.
The capital of the High Republic looks cleaner than it ever has been or ever will be.
Played by Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae, Master Sol is seen teaching a bunch of younglings at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.
Played by Rebecca Henderson, Master Vernestra Rwoh is the only major character in Star Wars The Acolyte so far that has already been established elsewhere, in the High Republic comics.
She is notable for wielding a purple-bladed lightsaber that can change into a lightwhip.
Played by Dafne Keen (best known for playing X-23 in 2017’s Logan), Jecki is the Padawan apprentice to Master Sol.
Osha sees visions of a younger version of her twin sister, Mae, as well as their home planet, Brendok. This is also how Osha learns or somehow feels that Mae is still alive.
What’s interesting is what the younger version of Mae said:
“You’re with me. I’m with you. Always one, but born as two.”
That sounds similar to what Kylo Ren said to Rey in Star Wars Star Wars Episode IX The Rise Of Skywalker:
“My mother was the daughter of Vader. Your father was the son of the Emperor. What Palpatine doesn’t know is we’re a dyad in the Force, Rey. Two that are one.”
The reason why Osha is seeing all these visions of her sister can maybe be explained by them being a Force Dyad.
In Star Wars lore, a Force dyad was a phenomenon that occurred when two Force-sensitive beings shared a unique Force-bond with each other, connecting their minds across time and space. They were physically two separate individuals, but they were one in the Force. This form of connection made it possible for the bonded individuals to communicate with each other across great distances.
The concept of a Force Dyad was first introduced in the Sequel Trilogy movies, especially in Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens.
Star Wars The Acolyte Episode 1 ends with our first look at the mysterious Sith antagonist character, who we still know nothing about. We don’t even know his name.
He’s played by Dean-Charles Chapman. Mae tries to kill him but fails.
Played by Manny Jacninto, Qimir is a former smuggler but now he’s helping Mae with her assassinations by making poison. He’s also aware of Mae’s mysterious Master.
The Barash Vow was an oath taken by Jedi who completely refrained from all activities related to the Jedi Order as a form of atonement or penitence, disengaging from anything but the Force itself, committing themselves to gaining ultimate communion with it. The vow was named after Jedi Master Barash Silvain, who originated the practice. Although most Jedi who swore the vow did so as a method of atonement, some did it in order to re-focus themselves on the Force.
Mae refers to what Master Torbin did on Brendok as a “crime”, but we still don’t know the details of what happened on Brendok.
And Mae wants to kill them all.
These include Sol, Indara, Torbin and Kelnacca.
Two are already dead; Indara and Torbin.
Kelnacca is a Wookie Jedi Knight. He’s the first Wookie Jedi we’ve seen in live-action. He’s played by Joonas Suotamo.
That’s all for this week, folks.
Until next week, excelsior!
May the Force be with you!
