The Boys Season 4 Review: The Bloodiest & Best Season Yet
By Alleef AshaariVerified|June 11, 2024|1 Comment
If there’s one show that’s been consistently worth subscribing to Prime Video for, it’s definitely The Boys. Showrunner Eric Kripke has crafted a series that’s an exciting mix of complex characters and deconstruction of the superhero genre. The Boys Season 4 continues that once again, proving why it’s one of the best ongoing shows right now.
The show’s signature bloody and violent mayhem already kicks off in the first 10 minutes of the first episode. That’s what’s great about The Boys, it never just saves all the good stuff until the end like other shows, it knows to give us a little bit every other episode. If you’re here for all of the deliciously depraved violence, you definitely won’t be disappointed with what The Boys Season 4 offers.
The self-aware meta tone grows this season, as The Boys are getting admonished by the CIA for being bad at their job at killing Supes. It feels like the showrunner and writers are aware of the current running meme gag where every new season makes The Boys seem more and more incompetent at doing their job. Seeing that being addressed in the show is funny as hell.
The new additions to the Seven are compelling. Susan Heyward as Sister Sage adds a lot to change the status quo, preventing all the attention from being overly focused on Anthony Starr’s Homelander. There has to be someone standing up to Homelander, and she fulfills that role as a worthy foil to him. What’s most interesting about her character is that she’s not defined by her powers because her true powers are her intelligence. It’s fun to see her outsmart everyone with her brains, which provides a unique dynamic.
Meanwhile, Valorie Curry’s Firecracker starts off as just another conservative right-wing Supe to further bolster Homelander’s ranks, but she gets more interesting as her backstory gets fleshed out. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character. The marketing for The Boys Season 4 has been pushing him a lot but he doesn’t show up or do much in the first four episodes. Perhaps he’s more prominent in the last four episodes of the season, but so far he’s just forgettable and unsubstantial. It’s a shame that series squanders him so far, considering the calibre of the actor. This is the same guy who played iconic roles such as the Comedian in Watchmen and Negan in The Walking Dead.
The first half of The Boys Season 4 has a strong focus on expanding Karen Fukuhara’s Kimiko and Tomer Capone’s Frenchie while also not abandoning the rest of the characters. The Boys truly feels like of an ensemble show as it continues and Jack Quaid’s Hughie becomes less and less vital as the main protagonist (though he still gets his moments). That’s not a bad thing; it’s actually the opposite, as almost all the characters in The Boys are almost equally compelling (though some more than others) and worthy of development.
The Boys Season 4 is a prime example of how a comic book adaptation can grow beyond its source material while still being faithful to its themes. The Boys Season 4 remains one of the most outrageously fun TV shows right now and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down. Not even superhero fatigue can bring down this series. At this point, The Boys is clearly on top of the throne of Prime Video’s library.
We received screeners for the first four episodes of The Boys Season 4 from Prime Video Malaysia. The Boys Season 4 is slated to premiere on Prime Video on 13 June 2024. There will be eight episodes in The Boys Season 4.
