Viewership Records Broken During Season 13 MPL Malaysia Playoffs

Over the weekend, Selangor played host to the exhilarating conclusion of MPL Malaysia Season 13, with Selangor Red Giants (SRG) emerging victorious. This season was one for the history books, setting new benchmarks for watch time and live viewership.

SRG delivered an extraordinary performance throughout the event, going undefeated in the group stage. They vanquished formidable opponents King Empire and RSG Malaysia on their way to the finals, where they faced the reigning champions, HomeBois.

Despite not maintaining a perfect map record in the finals, SRG’s confidence and skill shone through. They concluded the tournament with an outstanding 28 wins and just 3 losses—a remarkable feat for a team that had never before placed higher than third in the MPL Malaysia league.

MPL Malaysia Season 13 broadcasts captivated audiences, generating over 10.5 million hours of watch time—a 13% increase from the previous season, according to Esports Charts. The average concurrent viewership grew by 23.3%, and peak concurrent viewers soared by 14.4%, establishing new records across all metrics.

The grand final between SRG and HomeBois was the highlight of the tournament, with HomeBois clearly the fan favourite. Impressively, five of their matches were among the top five most-watched games of the season, and they led in total Hours Watched.

Several factors contributed to the surge in viewership for Season 13. The number of channels broadcasting the event increased significantly, from around 80 in Season 12 to 140 this season. This included more Indonesian broadcasts and an uptick in TikTok streams, which nearly matched YouTube in total hours watched.

Season 13’s peak viewership exceeded 631,000, reflecting the league’s rapid growth. For comparison, Season 9 in April 2022 peaked at 143,000 viewers, Season 10 reached 232,000, Season 11 hit 288,000, and Season 12 broke the half-million mark with 551,000 viewers. The MPL’s audience has grown dramatically, showing no signs of slowing down.

A notable development this season was the coverage of MPL Malaysia matches by official channels of other MPL leagues, such as MPL Philippines and MPL Cambodia. Previously, community casters primarily provided audience reach in other languages.

MPL Malaysia Season 13 has cemented its status as the most popular tournament in the series, boasting the highest total Hours Watched, average viewership, and peak viewership. As the league’s audience continues to expand, MPL Malaysia has solidified its position as the third most popular league among Mobile Legends: Bang Bang fans, trailing only Indonesia and the Philippines.

The future looks bright for MPL Malaysia, and with such a phenomenal season, fans can only expect even greater things to come.
