Deadpool & Wolverine Cameos & Easter Eggs Breakdown
By Alleef Ashaari|July 25, 2024|1 Comment
Deadpool & Wolverine is now showing in Malaysian cinemas and it’s the only Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie in 2024 after the last one, The Marvels in November 2023.
If you’re looking for a spoiler-free review of the movie, head on over here instead.
I’ll be discussing major spoilers from the movie (cameos and easter eggs), so here are some spoiler warnings:
There are plenty of cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine, many of which are extremely unexpected and shocking for Marvel fans.
In this article, I’ll list down the cameos from Deadpool & Wolverine. However, I won’t mention anyone who’s already revealed in the trailers or was already in the previous two Deadpool movies (such as the supporting cast making up Deadpool’s friends and family such as Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa).
There’s one sequence in Deadpool & Wolverine where Deadpool meets a bunch of Wolverine variants, including some interesting ones.
Out of all the Wolverine variants, this is the biggest surprise. It’s Henry Cavill playing a Wolverine variant, albeit one with super strength because in the scene, he sends Deadpool flying back into the portal by punching him. That’s probably a nod/easter egg to his iconic role as Superman in the Snyder-Verse DC movies (Man Of Steel, etc.).
This is a funny inside joke because the accurate comic book height of Wolverine is 5’3” (1.60 m). However, some fans have always pointed out how Hugh Jackman Wolverine is too tall for the role, as he is 6’3” (1.91 m).
One of Wolverine’s most iconic costumes (besides the yellow and blue costume) was his brown costume, which was created and designed by comic book creator John Byrne. Also, this scene references the iconic cover of The Incredible Hulk #340 by Todd MacFarlane published in 1988, in which Wolverine in his brown costume fights against Hulk.
In the comics, Patch is an alias used by Wolverine while operating on the island of Madripoor. In this disguise, he wears a smart white jacket and eye patch, blending in with the criminals of Madripoor by gambling and more.
This is the version of Wolverine from the alternate timeline known as the Age Of Apocalypse, which is a world conquered by Apocalypse after the death of Charles Xavier. This version of Wolverine took on the name Weapon X and is known for losing his left arm and replacing it with a metal stump.
This one is perhaps the most obscure one of all. It’s based on the iconic cover of 1989’s Uncanny X-Men #251 by Chris Claremont, Marc Silvestri, Dan Green, Tom Orzechowski, and Glynis Oliver. In the comics, Logan was crucified on the X-shaped cross by Donald Pierce, the former White King of the Hellfire Club and the Reavers.
This is the main Wolverine variant of the movie and near the end of the movie, he finally wears his full iconic mask for the first time ever in live-action. It’s a legendary moment for fans of the character, who have been waiting for decades for this to happen, and it’s finally happening in Deadpool & Wolverine.
The cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine go beyond just Wolverine variants. There are several characters from past 20th Century Fox Marvel films that show up in this movie, with their original actors/actresses reprising their roles from the original movies.
These include:
Chris Evans appears in Deadpool & Wolverine. At first, everyone assumes him to be a Captain America variant. However, he shouts “Flame On!”, revealing that he’s actually the Human Torch. He dies pretty early on in the movie, getting killed by Cassandra Nova.
This is perhaps the biggest surprise out of all the non-Wolverine variant cameos, especially considering that Wesley Snipes is pretty much almost ‘retired’ as an actor these days. That Disney money probably convinced him to return as Eric Brooks AKA Blade one last time and it’s awesome seeing the veteran actor as the Daywalker again.
It’s also interesting to note that Wesley Snipes actually starred alongside Ryan Reynolds (where he played a character named Hannibal King) in 2004’s Blade Trinity.
This cameo was already confirmed a while ago (in July 2023), but it’s still nice to see Jennifer Garner back with her iconic sais as the assassin, Elektra.
This is a fascinating cameo because Channing Tatum never actually got to act as Gambit in any movie because even though he was cast, the Gambit movie was never filmed. This made Channing Tatum’s cameo even funnier as we get some meta jokes about his unique situation as the only hero not from any existing movie (though technically Taylor Kitsch played Gambit in 2009’s X-Men Origins Wolverine).
While this cameo was spoiled by Marvel themselves via the final trailer for the movie, it’s still awesome to see a grown-up X-23 interact with Wolverine in live-action.
Fans have long speculated about who would be playing Ladypool or Lady Deadpool. For a while, the popular fan casting has been Taylor Swift. That being said, we never actually see the character’s face unmasked in the movie. However, in the credits of the movie, it confirms that Blake Lively (AKA Ryan Reynolds’ wife in real life) is indeed playing the character.
Most of the Deadpool Corps members seen in Deadpool & Wolverine are just random Deadpool variants like cowboy Deadpool, etc. None of them are actually prominent Deadpool variants from the comics, except for one noticeable exception. The armoured Deadpool Corps member in the movie is the only one with futuristic armour and she never speaks.
However, in the comics, that’s actually Warda Wilson, one of two daughters of Deadpool (yes, Deadpool has two daughters in the comics) and she’s also the main Deadpool of 2099. Warda is Deadpool’s daughter with Shiklah, the queen of monsters, whom Deadpool was married to for a while in the comics.
Wunmi Mosaku reprises her role as Hunter B-15 from the Loki TV series.
This isn’t a character but I’d just like to add this as an honourable mention because it’s an interesting easter egg. In The Void, the goons of Cassandra Nova can be seen riding a bunch of Mad Max-like vehicles. However, one of them is actually riding a floating Fantasticar, which is funny because that would make this the first time we’re seeing a comics-accurate Fantasticar in live-action for the first time.
