Deadpool & Wolverine: Most Iconic Team-Ups & Moments In Comics, Movies & TV
By Alleef Ashaari|July 17, 2024|2 Comments
Deadpool & Wolverine will be the only Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie coming out in 2024. It premieres in Malaysian cinemas on 25 July 2024.
The synopsis reads:
Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date—”Deadpool & Wolverine.” A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existenFal threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier… reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to—Fuck. Synopses are so fucking stupid.
Recently, we given the opportunity to join a virtual press conference with the cast of the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, including Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson/Deadpool), Hugh Jackman (Logan/Wolverine) and Shawn Levy (director). Check out what they had to say about Marvel Jesus and more by heading over here.
However, the movie won’t be the first time that the two characters have worked together or had team-ups in the past. They have a long history together not only in the comics but also in other mediums, including animated movies and series.
Let’s check out some of the most iconic Deadpool and Wolverine team-ups below:
In Wolverine Annual (1995) #1 by Christopher Golden and Ben Herrera, Wolverine saved Deadpool after he was captured by Doctor Westergaard and Slayback because they conducted torturous experiments on his healing factor to produce a valuable cure for a mutant plague called the Legacy Virus.
In Wolverine Annual (1999) #1 by Marc Andreyko and Walter McDaniel, as Wolverine got a book signed by Duncan Vess, an author who also happened to be a werewolf, Deadpool attempted to complete a mission to kill the writer. During Wolverine and Deadpool’s subsequent battle with each other, they were attacked by the werewolf Lycus, who was also hunting Duncan. They then teamed up to fight the werewolf and went for drinks afterwards.
It’s easy to forget that Deadpool is actually not really a mutant, despite him being closely associated with the X-Men. Did you know that he was only able to officially join the X-Men in Deadpool (2008) #16 by Daniel Way and Paco Medina? On Wolverine’s advice and to keep Deadpool from causing them bigger problems, Cyclops reluctantly made Wade a probationary X-Men member.
Yeah, before 2008, he was never a member of the X-Men, despite what people may think.
When a malfunctioning Shi’ar Stalker robot crashed onto Earth while searching for the late Jean Grey, Wolverine asked Deadpool to help him take down the alien machine in Wolverine/Deadpool: The Decoy (2010) #1 by Stuart Moore and Shawn Crystal.
X-Force was already featured in Deadpool 2 but that doesn’t mean that they can’t return. Perhaps this time as the Uncanny X-Force with new suits and new rosters? In this 2010 run by Rick Remender and Jerome Opeña the roster consisted of Fantomex, Psylocke (Betsy Braddock), Wolverine (Logan), Deadpool (Wade Wilson) and Angel / Archangel (Warren Worthington III). While Deadpool here still has his wisecracks, he’s a bit more grim and serious in this X-Men book run. Fitting, given that this group is more or less a kill squad for extreme situations.
The 2012 Deadpool series (Deadpool #15 by Gerry Duggan, Brian Posehn, and Declan Shalvey) gave us one of the best modern Deadpool tales. Deadpool teams up with both Wolverine and Captain America as they investigate a clandestine organization that’s been harvesting Wade’s organs and using them to create a new army of super-soldiers.
Some Multiverse hijinks led to Deadpool meeting Old Man Logan in Deadpool Vs. Old Man Logan (2017) #1 by Declan Shalvey and Mike Henderson.
In Deadpool Badder Blood (2023) #1 by Rob Liefeld and Chad Bowers, Department H turned Wade Wilson’s best friend from high school into the superhuman assassin Thumper, forcing Deadpool, Wolverine, and Cable to team up to stop him from building an army of Super-Soldiers.
When the X-Men and the rest of Marvel’s mutants formed a nation on the island of Krakoa, Deadpool desperately wanted to join them. Wade stepped back into Logan’s life after Wolverine found a crime scene littered with dead government agents and broken robot replicas of the X-Men in Wolverine (2020) #20 by Ben Percy and Adam Kubert. As Deadpool explained to Wolverine, he stopped an exchange between the C.I.A. and Danger, the sentient version of the Danger Room, hoping to impress Krakoa.
In exchange for the return of her robotic daughter, Danger had produced cybernetic X-Men replicas for the government. Once they tore through Danger’s Wolverine replicas and were captured by their old frenemies Maverick and Weasel, Deadpool and Wolverine confronted Danger and ultimately left her alone in the ruins of the X-Mansion. When their mission was done, Wolverine invited Deadpool to join him in Krakoa’s X-Force, where Wade went on several adventures with the mutant team.
Wolverine Origins issues 21 to 25 (2006) by Daniel Way and Steve Dillon feature one of the most violent fights between Deadpool and Wolverine. Hopefully, parts of what makes this run special can make it in the Deadpool 3 movie since it’ll be rated R.
This is their latest team-up in the comics, and it’s still ongoing (at the time of writing). In Deadpool & Wolverine WWII by Joe Kelly and Adam Kubert, Deadpool and Wolverine have to team up to fight against a mysterious enemy simply called Delta.
Hulk Vs was a direct-to-video animated film released back in 2009. It featured two short animated segments with stories of how Hulk fought against Thor and another where he fought against Wolverine. In the Hulk Vs. Wolverine segment, Deadpool (voiced by Nolan North) ends up being part of the team sent to kill Wolverine (voiced by Steve Blum). The VO work here is so good, both actors end up being the default voices for our death-dealing duo.
You can watch a clip of the scene by heading over here.
Deadpool had a voiceless cameo in X-Men The Animated Series, where the mutant Morph knew about Deadpool and his connections to Wolverine. He morphed into the figure in order to taunt Wolverine, who tracked him to an underground mine.
We know how many people hate the X-Men Origins Wolverine movie, but at this point, it’s easy to point back and laugh at this disaster. Deadpool is the Merc With A Mouth and they sewed his mouth shut? Who the heck decided that was a good idea?
