Sonic Team Boss Would Like To Make A Good Sonic RPG One Day; Inadvertedly Throws Shade At Bioware

Sega and the publishers/devs under it have been making a ton of great Japanese role-playing games just in 2024 alone: Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the Persona 3 remake, Unicorn Overlord, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, and the upcoming Metaphor ReFantazio. This does beg the question: will there be one starring Sega’s blue speedster?

Turns out Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka would like one. In a Good Vibes Gaming interview, Iizuka would like to take a stab at making a Sonic RPG.

“Personally, I like role-playing games, The RPG game format is a lot of fun and I’ve even thought to myself, ‘you know, for the past 30 years we haven’t done a Sonic RPG’, and I’m questioning myself, ‘why haven’t we done a Sonic RPG in all this time? How have we gotten to 30 years with no RPGs?”

So what does Bioware, the makers of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age games, on our headline has to do with Sonic and RPGs? Based on the phrasing “how have we gotten to 30 years with no [Sonic] RPGs?” he clearly forgot about Bioware’s Sonic RPG. To be fair, most people would.

See, in 2008, Bioware made Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood for Nintendo DS under Sega. It was quite a mid-level RPG with a “memorable” soundtrack. Though to be fair, the development process for the game’s final parts were excruciating, resulting in the game being largely forgotten in gaming history.

Still, I wouldn’t mind seeing a brand-new Sonic RPG made by Atlus or whoever Sega has under them, flashy menu system and all. On a related note, the 2D/3D platformer Sonic X Shadow Generations is coming out on 25 October for PC and consoles. The Sonic The Hedgehog 3 movie is coming out on 19 December worldwide.
