If you’ve been out of touch with DOOM or DOOM II for a bit — or haven’t yet had the pleasure of diving into these iconic titles — Bethesda’s latest surprise release presents the perfect opportunity to explore these classics anew.
This recent launch, cleverly bundling the first two games into an enhanced package aptly named DOOM + DOOM II, serves as a complimentary upgrade for existing owners of either DOOM (1993) or DOOM II. It introduces an impressive array of upgrades, notably featuring a new single-player episode alongside a cross-platform, online deathmatch mode, and more.
Players gain access not only to the original pair of games but also additional single-player adventures such as the Sigil episode by John Romero launched in 2019 and the newly introduced Legacy of Rust episode. This latter episode includes levels crafted by the collaborative efforts of id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames, as per Bethesda. Furthermore, players can enrich their experience by downloading single-player mods directly via a newly integrated in-game mod browser.
For those prefer competitive play, Bethesda has expanded the deathmatch arena with 25 new maps, raising the total available to 43. The expansion also introduces support for cross-platform deathmatch and co-op play for up to 16 players.
This bundle edition brings technical enhancements, supporting 4K resolution and 120fps gameplay on consoles and PC platforms. Moreover, updated soundtracks for both games by Andrew Hulshult, known for his work on DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods DLC, offering players the choice between original and updated soundtracks.
Bethesda Softworks’ collaboration with id Software and MachineGames, alongside Nightdive Studios, previously resulted in the acclaimed remasters of DOOM 64, Quake, and Quake 2, recognized for their upgrades and features.
The enhanced bundle is now available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
Looking forward, the DOOM series shows no signs of stopping, with anticipation building for the next major installment, DOOM: The Dark Ages, scheduled for release in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It will also be available for Day-One release Xbox Game Pass.
