Borderlands Movie to hit Streaming Platforms After Brief Cinematic Debut
By Alisha Alix|August 28, 2024|0 Comment
The Borderlands movie is making its way to streaming platforms later this week. After its theatrical release on 8 August, the film is making a swift transition to digital, becoming available for purchase or rental on platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google Play starting 30 August.
Featuring A-list Hollywood stars including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, Florian Munteanu, and Ariana Greenblatt, the Borderlands movie has generated significant buzz. Despite its star-studded cast, the decision to release the movie digitally just three weeks after its theatrical debut comes as no surprise given its lackluster performance at the box office.
Early reviews and social media reactions to the film were less than favourable, and this was reflected in its disappointing global box office earnings of $16.5 million, far below its $115 million budget. As a result, the swift move to digital platforms signals a strategic pivot for the film, allowing audiences to experience it outside of cinemas.
Our impression of Eli Roth’s action shooter was far from a great experience, stating that, “it is pretty subpar as a standalone sci-fi action flick and will only sate the jollies of fans who love to spot easter eggs and references from the long-running looter-shooter series of games”. You can find out more in our written review here.
While the movie’s future remains uncertain, fans of the Borderlands game series can look forward to the upcoming Borderlands 4, which has been met with much more enthusiasm.
