Diablo 4 Season 5’s Popular Build Gets Nerfed Due To Causing Major Server Issues

You know you’re onto an epic class build for an action RPG when its makers says that it’s effing up the online servers it’s on due to everyone going for it.

That’s the case with Diablo 4’s latest season. In Season 5 -featuring the new Infernal Horde mode- the Sorcerer class has seen a much-needed buff after being sidelined the past Seasons. However, one of the class’ builds is clearly a huge leap in power levels over the rest.

Enter the Lightning Spear Sorcerer build. To sum it up, you summon a bunch of Frozen Orbs that in turn help you summon Lightning Spear more frequently, spamming the screen with frost and lightning bullet hell which equals dead enemies. The equipment and aspects are tailored towards maximizing the damage, with a key Unique amulet being the Fractured Winterglass which summons a random Conjuration spell in your skill list when a Frozen Orb is summoned, and lowers Conjuration spell Cooldowns when your Frozen Orbs explode. And in this game, Lightning Spear is a Conjuration spell. So yeah, Fractured Winterglass is VERY important in this OP build.

However, having a huge player base in your game going for this build and spamming lightning spears and Frozen Orbs all at once can be very taxing to your expensive gaming servers. As such, this Season has seen a ton of performance issues, lagging, and hard crashes in some cases. Yes, I’ve experienced a bit of this in Diablo 4 the past few days, and it’s clearly due to the popularity of this screen-spamming build. Blizzard has basically reduced the frequency of the Lightning Spear arcing to additional enemies and bumped up the damage to compensate (via the official Diablo 4 forums).

“In rare instances, [the aspect of Splintering Energy] alongside Fractured Winterglass could cause detrimental server performance issues. To solve for this, we’re reducing the frequency of it arcing to additional enemies, and increasing its damage to compensate. Additionally, the amount of Frozen Orbs that can be launched from Conjurations while using Fractured Winterglass has been adjusted in these rare instances.”

Some folks who used the build are complaining because they don’t do as much damage in endgame content like high-Tier Pit runs. Though if you aren’t pushing that game mode, the nerf is barely noticeable. Normally, most companies shouldn’t be tampering with the meta during a Season, but in the case of a build causing huge server and technical issues, this one’s warranted.

It does goes to show that Blizzard is listening and giving their all to make the Diablo 4 post-launch experience better and better. Even with earlier missteps like Season 3, the company is showing huge signs of improvement throughout the months. On a related note, here’s a great guide from Diablo 4 content creator Raxx on how to make the Lightning Spear Sorcerer build. It’s not meant for leveling up, but rather for respeccing and for endgame purposes once you’ve farmed the necessary Uniques and Aspects for it.
