As we celebrate Merdeka Day, it’s only fitting that we honour the Malaysian esports teams who’ve made our nation proud on the global stage. From dominating world championships to setting new standards in competitive gaming, these teams have etched their names in the annals of esports history. Here’s a spotlight on the top five teams with the most impressive achievements.
In a thrilling display of skill and strategy, Selangor Red Giants’ Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) team conquered the world at the 2024 Esports World Cup in Riyadh. Taking home a staggering US$1,000,000, they defeated the formidable Falcons AP.Bren in a nail-biting Grand Finals. Their victory not only showcased their prowess but also cemented Malaysia’s position on the global esports map.
We may know the roster as the all-Malaysian Fnatic roster, but before that, they competed under Orange Esports and made waves in the Dota 2 scene with their historic run at The International 2013. As the first Malaysian team to reach the top 3 at the prestigious tournament, they put Malaysia on the radar of the global esports community. Their innovative playstyle and tenacity in high-pressure situations set the stage for future generations of Malaysian Dota 2 players.
TODAK’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) team made history with their remarkable third-place finish at the inaugural M1 World Championship in 2019. Competing against the best teams from around the globe, TODAK showcased their skill, resilience, and tactical brilliance. Their podium finish at such a prestigious event marked a significant milestone for Malaysian esports, proving that they could compete with the world’s elite.
LGD Gaming’s Honor of Kings team, featuring standout players like MusangKing, Siang, JR, Zhihong, and Zhe, recently made Malaysia proud by securing 2nd place at the 2024 Esports World Cup. Their incredible run earned them US$500,000 and solidified their reputation as one of the top Honor of Kings teams in the world. Their synergy and tactical prowess on the battlefield have made them icons in the Malaysian esports scene.
Formerly known as Diao, ICLY is a Malaysian TETR.IO prodigy, who has been a dominant force in the TETR.IO scene since 2020. Not much is known about them other than that they’re Malaysian. With an astonishing record, ICLY only placed outside the top 3 twice out of 28 recorded tournaments. In 2023, ICLY’s journey culminated in winning the TETR.IO World Championship, solidifying their legacy as one of the greatest players in the game’s history. Their consistency, precision, and unmatched strategic insight have made them a true esports legend.
As Malaysia continues to soar in the world of esports, these teams are a testament to our nation’s talent, dedication, and competitive spirit. Their achievements not only bring glory to the country but also inspire countless aspiring gamers to dream big and aim high. On this Merdeka Day, we celebrate their victories and look forward to witnessing more Malaysian teams rise to the top, proving that the spirit of Merdeka thrives in every battle they fight, every strategy they craft, and every game they win.
