Nintendo Reportedly Reveals Release Window for Switch 2

It has been reported that Nintendo has informed developers about the expected release window for the upcoming Switch 2 console. According to the reports, the system is not likely to be launched around the same time as the original Switch.

Originally slated for a Q1 2025 release, which spans from January to March, the timeline for the Switch 2 launch may have been adjusted if the most recent report is accurate.

Developers have been briefed not to anticipate the launch of Nintendo’s next-gen successor before April 2025. Switch 2 is not expected to hit the market in 2024 and may not be available until at least mid-2025, according to sources within the game development industry who spoke with GamesIndustry.biz‘s Christopher Dring.

“No developer I’ve spoken to expects it to be launching this financial year. In fact, they’ve been told not to expect it in the (current) financial year. A bunch of people I spoke to hope it’s out in April or May time, still early next year, not late.”

The original Switch was launched in March 2017 and is currently in its seventh year on the market. Considered to be one of the longest lifespans for a console before being replaced.

In its first-quarter earnings report this month, Nintendo revealed that the Switch had sold 143.42 million units as of June 2024. The company anticipates selling 13.5 million Switch consoles this financial year, following the sale of 2.1 million units in the first quarter.

The Switch has become Nintendo’s top-selling home console and the third best-selling game console of all time, trailing only the PlayStation 2 (160 million units) and the Nintendo DS (154.02 million units), for now.
