Halloween 2024: Best Horror Movies & Series on Malaysian Streaming Services & Cinemas this October

Are you ready for the spooky season? Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect time for horror fans to indulge in their favorite scary movies and series. While it’s great to revisit old classics, there are also some exciting new releases to look forward to in October 2024. With so many streaming services available in Malaysia, here are our top picks for new horror movies and series to add to your watchlist:

Salem’s Lot – 3 October (HBO GO)

Salem’s Lot is the next big Stephen King movie adaptation (based on the Stephen King novel of the same name) so that alone makes it a must-watch for horror fans!

Author Ben Mears returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book only to discover his hometown is being preyed upon by a bloodthirsty vampire.

Salem’s Lot stars Lewis Pullman (Ben Mears), Alfre Woodard (Dr. Cody), Makenzie Leigh (Susan Norton), Bill Camp (Matthew Burke), Spencer Treat Clark (Mike Ryerson), Pilou Asbæk (Straker), and John Benjamin Hickey (Father Callahan).

House Of Spoils – 3 October (Prime Video)

House of Spoils follows an ambitious chef (Ariana DeBose) who opens her first restaurant, a farm-to-table affair on a remote estate, where she battles kitchen chaos, a dubious investor, crushing self-doubts and the powerful spirit of the estate’s previous owner who threatens to sabotage her at every turn. House of Spoils is a tense, psychological and sensuous thriller that will leave hearts pounding and mouth-watering.

It stars Ariana DeBose, Barbie Ferreira and Arian Moayed.

Hold Your Breath – 3 October (Disney+ Hotstar)

In 1930s Oklahoma, a young mother haunted by the past becomes convinced that a mysterious presence in dust storms is threatening her family and takes extraordinary measures to protect them. Directed by Karrie Crouse and Will Joines, the movie stars Sarah Paulson, Amiah Miller, Annaleigh Ashford, Alona Jane Robbins, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

It’s What’s Inside – 4 October (Netflix)

A group of friends gather for a pre-wedding party that descends into an existential nightmare when an estranged friend arrives with a mysterious game that awakens long-hidden secrets, desires, and grudges. The Netflix film stars Brittany O’Grady, James Morosini, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Devon Terrell, Gavin Leatherwood, Reina Hardesty, Nina Bloomgarden, and David W. Thompson.

The Platform 2 – 4 October (Netflix)

The film returns to the world of The Platform, a large, tower-style Vertical Self-Management Center prison that houses various criminals. The dozens of floors house two occupants per floor and a free-floating platform delivers food to them on a daily schedule. Viewers can expect stars Milena Smit, Hovik Keuchkerian, Natalia Tena, and Óscar Jaenada.

Lembayung – 10 October (In Cinemas)

In this Indonesian horror movie directed by Baim Wong, Pica and Arum are nursing students who are about to undergo their internship at the Lembayung Clinic, which has just opened after being closed for a long time. When Arum begins to become possessed, Pica tries to uncover the mystery of the Lembayung Clinic before his friend becomes the next victim.

American Horror Stories – 15 October (Disney+ Hotstar)

American Horror Stories is a spin-off of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s award-winning hit anthology series American Horror Story. American Horror Stories is an anthology series that features a different horror story each episode.

The five new spooky tales feature a cast that includes Michael Imperioli, Henry Winkler, Dyllón Burnside, Debby Ryan, Jeff Hiller, Jessica Barden, Angel Bismark Curiel, Guy Burnet, Victor Garber, June Squibb, among others.

Chucky TV Series – 15 October (Netflix)

If you’re a horror fan, then you’d probably recognize the most (in)famous haunted doll of all; Chucky himself, but did you know that there have been three seasons of the Chucky TV series?

This will be the first time that the Chucky TV series will be available in Malaysia (after airing on SyFy in the US), and it’s highly recommended, especially if you’ve been following the Child’s Play franchise. Even if you haven’t, this series is full of the franchise’s trademark dark humour and great bloody kills.

Smile 2 – 17 October (UIP Malaysia – In Cinemas)

About to embark on a new world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control.

Outside – 17 October (Netflix)

Netflix’s first Filipino zombie movie, “Outside,” features popular actors Sid Lucero and Beauty Gonzalez. Director Carlo Ledesma described the film as more than just a zombie movie, calling it a “terrifying psychological thriller.” He emphasized that at its core, the movie explores a family’s struggle for survival. Ledesma, known for his work in horror films such as “The Tunnel” and “Sunod,” shared this insight during the Netflix APAC Southeast Asia Showcase in Indonesia last June.

The Netflix synopsis for “Outside” tells the story of a family seeking refuge on an isolated farm during a zombie outbreak. However, the burden of long-held secrets takes its toll as they navigate their desolate world.

Woman of the Hour – 18 October (Netflix)

Anna Kendrick stars in her directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, the stranger-than-fiction story of an aspiring actress in 1970s Los Angeles and a serial killer in the midst of a yearslong murder spree, whose lives intersect when they’re cast on an episode of The Dating Game.

Carved – 21 October (Disney+ Hotstar)
