The Best PC Games To Play Right Now

If there’s one constant in the universe of gaming, it’s that personal computer gaming, or PC gaming, is going to stick around for eternity.

With new graphics cards being made and new processors being upgraded (Intel or AMD, anyone?), and with way more affordable options for gaming on any PC, the gaming library here has been nothing short of staggering. Overwhelming, even. Thousands of new PC games are coming out every year, from your small indie titles to big juggernaut entries that will take a lot of your time. Heck, some of them are even free.

At Kakuchopurei, we pride ourselves in giving you the best recommendations for your PC. Here is our current list of PC games you should play and/or buy right now. While some of these are multiplatform, we’re confident to say that they’re better on a PC mouse-and-keyboard setup.

Disclaimer: this list will always be ever-growing and ever-updated.

Recent & Current PC Games

Path of Exile (F2P)

The long-running action RPG that’s arguably superior to the Diablo series had its start in 2013, and isn’t letting up anytime soon. You pick a class, kill enemies and mobs, fight massive bosses, and power yourself up using the game’s (in)famous passive skill tree that’s bigger than anything you’ve seen in your PC-gaming life.

Path of Exile’s latest update this year adds in a season where you can build your own homestead and reworked a number of classes, while adding in much-needed quality-of-life upgrades. Developer Grinding Gear Games listens to its action RPGing community and just keep at it with the updates and upgrades while still keeping the game fresh and challenging.

Path of Exile is free on PC (Steam).

Elden Ring & Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

One of 2022’s best action RPGs and Soulslike just got a new DLC this year. It’s even more challenging than the first, which means anyone who didn’t play through almost all of Elden Ring will find great value in playing the base game AND the DLC this year.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree complements the base game and also expands its systemic scope of challenging RPG gameplay further, with new weapons, new builds, and new bosses and areas to conquer and explore.

Zenless Zone Zero (F2P)

HoYoverse’s latest game of 2024 is essentially an action game tailored for mobile devices, but it runs really well on PC. Plus, you have the option of either using keyboard and mouse or the controller, both of which are more viable and responsive than the touchscreen controls. At the risk of sounding like a master race mouthbreather, the PC version of Zenless Zone Zero is the superior version that you can play for free right now.

With an eclectic cast of characters to play as (with more you can gacha), and fun action to go along with out, ZZZ is definitely worth your PC-gaming time. Just be mindful of the lengthy onboarding process.

Diablo 4

Blizzard’s iconic action RPG gets a fourth mothership game, and it’s as packed as it gets. You kill things, get lots of loot, and partake in more endgame content that gives you better loot and bigger challenges. The expansion pack is coming out later in 2024, so now’s the best time to get on-board your hell-culling spree with the game’s multitude of classes and expansive open-world version of Sanctuary.

Valorant (F2P)

Riot Games’ team-based hero shooter that’s more Counter-Strike than Overwatch is still going strong. It runs on most PCs so you don’t need to buy a current gaming rig to meet its recommended specs, it boasts a ton of seasons and colourful cast of heroes to play as, and you are sure to find a ton of people to team up and play with.

Plus, the Valorant esports scene is going strong so you can stay up-to-date by watching pro players go at it, then learn what you watch and hopefully apply it practically. Or die trying, but at least you’ll be given multiple chances to shine as Valorant isn’t going to go offline anytime soon.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape

If you want to wrap up Destiny and Destiny 2’s storyline, now’s a better time as any as the final expansion that caps off the main story is out right now. The Final Shape is also the best expansion of Destiny yet as it still is a compelling shooter that offers loads of stuff to do.

Maybe not the garbage PvP mode, but everything else that lets you team up and wreak havoc in PvE is all aces.

Manor Lords (Early Access)

Manor Lords is this year’s talked-about medieval strategy game with in-depth city-building, large-scale tactical battles, and economic simulations you can manage. And it’s pretty detailed and mostly complete for an Early Access title.

Hades 2 (Early Access)

Another Early Access game, but this Hades sequel is packed to the gill with action and content even in an unfinished state. New weapons, new playstyle via new protagonist, new stages and an overworld segment, and fun bosses to fight, it’s the sequel everyone is clamouring for.

Helldivers 2

A Starship Troopers-inspired scifi title, where you team up with other online players and deal with bugs and killer robots in different planets in the name of democracy. Not only is the shooting and gameplay fun and hectic, but it’s also very funny. It’s also very telling that a game with little to no faces and modestly budgeted production-wise is still faring so much better than PlayStation’s recent live service shooter that took 8 years to make and peaked at 600 players at launch week. Maybe the publisher should have hedged a fraction of that US$50-100 million budget to keep Arrowhead Studios’ game running and continuously updated until 2025.

Tekken 8

Out this year, this new mothership 3D fighting game is the de facto Tekken game to get good at, as well as play through for its robust offline and online features. Boasting a nice story mode, an Arcade Quest mode that teaches you the nuances of Tekken and 3D fighting, a big cast of characters featuring old and new fighters, and an ever-active online mode, this 3D fighting rules the current roost in that field.

Whether you play on pad or on one of those fancy hitboxes, you’ll have a grand old time with the Heat System and juggling combo-heavy gameplay.

Street Fighter 6

Another multiplayer fighting game fare, but this time in 2D. Street Fighter 6 has an expansive World Tour mode that’s essentially Street Fighter: The RPG complete with your custom character. Apart from that, SF6 has a plethora of offline and online gameplay options to delve into, and still is being updated with new Season characters.

Baldur’s Gate 3

Last year’s ultimate computer role-playing game title goes to Larian Studio’s take on Baldur’s Gate. It’s epic, it’s got full of character, and it’s got a ton of current Dungeons & Dragons party-building and turn-based combat gameplay to sink 60+ hours into. We’ll even go as far as to say that it’s worth paying full price for. Maybe not so much for the bugs that pops up in Act 3 every now and then, but everything else is golden.

Call of Duty: Warzone

Activision has done it: they’ve made a forever Call of Duty game. If you need a free modern warfare pop-and-stop first-person shooter fix with spot-on controls and an ongoing battle royale mode that you can take seriously, you can’t go wrong with this free offering.

Warframe (F2P)

A free-to-play third-person shooter set in a sci-fi universe, Warframe is one rare example of a Western studio that made F2P work. Featuring a ton of Warframe suits players can collect and craft, along with a plethora of missions and seasonal content to go through, Warframe had more ups than downs in its life cycle, with pop-in and pop-out PvE gameplay and even a story mode or two to go through.

The latest Warframe update is bringing the game back to its “Dark Sector” roots, taking place in 1999 and solidifying its origins with new backstory and tons of gameplay to back it up.

Balatro

The definitive roguelike poker experience. Balatro lets you create your uber poker deck out of your base 52-card deck and go wild with endless combinations, all for the sake of beating the ever-growing Blinds and scores with poker hand plays. Yes, you can even load up your deck with nothing but Aces and face cards if you wish!

Past Titles & Top Picks From Yesteryear

A Space For The Unbound: Indonesian-made adventure game with lovely pixel graphics, lovely music, fun puzzles, and a heartfelt narrative.

Disco Elysium: A computer RPG featuring a whodunnit mystery to solve, the choice to become a hero or a scumbag, and a lot of skill systems to mess around with

Tchia: Open world + tropical setting + New Caledonia culture + ukulele jamming = a unique indie adventure!

Dave The Diver: Not quite an indie game, but a charming mess-of-sims-and-action.

Remnant 2: Need a tougher action RPG and shooter than Destiny, Borderlands, and Warframe? Remnant 2’s got you covered.

Honkai Star Rail: A free-to-play turn-based role-playing game set in a fantasy space world. Features big bosses to defeat, dreamscapes and warfleets to explore in and on, and a colourful cast of JRPG characters to recruit and gacha.

Pizza Tower: No Wario games on PC? No problem. We have Pizza Tower.

Teardown: Break stuff for a heist to open up shortcuts in this physics-heavy sandbox simulation.

Slay The Spire: The OG deckbuilder roguelike, now on the cheap.

Forza Horizon 5: PC gaming may have some cool racing games over the years, but this 2021 triple-A open-world racer beats all of them. It’s also made by a good number of developers who worked on the legendary Burnout series, specifically Burnout Paradise.

Dwarf Fortress: The deepest, most intricate simulation of a world that’s ever been created.

Vampire Survivors: For the price of a McDonald’s set meal, you get to kill off over 100 hours of your free time surviving bullet heaven in this 2D topdown roguelite action title that uses legally distinct Castlevania sprites. Also made by just one guy.
