The Penguin Episode 2 Breakdown & Easter Eggs
By Alleef Ashaari|September 30, 2024|0 Comment
The second episode of The Penguin Season 1 is now streaming on HBO GO and HBO (Astro Channel 411 / Unifi TV 401).
The events of The Penguin take place after 2022’s The Batman, as he rises to become the iconic villain from the comics. It will consist of eight episodes in its first season.
Subsequent new episodes continue every Monday, from 30 September 2024.
Check out my breakdown of The Penguin Episode 1 here.
Starring Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb (aka “The Penguin”), the DC Studios series continues filmmaker Matt Reeves’ The Batman epic crime saga that began with Warner Bros. Pictures’ global blockbuster The Batman. Developed by showrunner Lauren LeFranc, the series centers on the character played by Farrell in the film.
Cast includes Colin Farrell (Oz Cobb), Cristin Milioti (Sofia Falcone), Rhenzy Feliz (Victor Aguilar), Michael Kelly (Johnny Viti), Shohreh Aghdashloo (Nadia Maroni), Deirdre O’Connell (Francis Cobb), Clancy Brown (Salvatore Maroni), James Madio (Milos Grapa), Scott Cohen (Luca Falcone), Michael Zegen (Alberto Falcone), Carmen Ejogo (Eve Karlo) and Theo Rossi (Dr. Julian Rush).
The Batman Part 2 is slated to premiere in October 2026. In the meantime, you can head on over here for my breakdown of The Batman’s ending and post-credits, as well as what to expect from the upcoming sequel.
Dr. Julian Rush is played by actor Theo Rossi.
We meet him as Sofia Falcone’s therapist in The Penguin.
Julian Rush is not in the comics, but some are speculating that he might be The Batman universe’s version of Dr. Hugo Strange or Dr. Jonathan Crane AKA the Scarecrow from the comics. Both of those villains started off as psychiatrists and/or psychologists, so Dr. Julian Rush might eventually turn out to be one of them.
This is Hugo Strange:
And this is Scarecrow (who’s more well-known than Hugo Strange because there are already several live-action versions of him in the past):
Let the gang war begin.
While at a party, when Vic tells Roxy (played by actress Jessie Pinnick) that he’s from Crown Point, Roxy mentions that people now call that place a “no man’s land”.
That’s very interesting, because No Man’s Land is an iconic Batman story arc from the comics, which also actually inspired the plot in both 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises and 2022’s The Batman (and probably its upcoming sequel too), as well as games like 2011’s Batman Arkham City.
1999’s Batman: No Man’s Land was written by Jordan B. Gorfinkel. The original comic story arc began with the Cataclysm story arc, which described a major earthquake hitting Gotham City. This was followed by the storylines Aftershock and then Road To No Man’s Land, which resulted in the U.S. government officially evacuating Gotham and then abandoning and isolating those who chose to remain in the city.
During this chaotic time, many supervillains, including the Penguin and Joker, took control of parts of Gotham City and turned it into their territory.
Looks like things are getting even more twisty and intriguing! Lots of mob drama in this mob drama!
Well, that’s another great episode of The Penguin. While this series isn’t exactly your conventional comic book series with a truckload of easter eggs shoved in our faces, it’s still nice to see some nice little easter eggs and references like the ones involving No Man’s Land.
Until the next episode, excelsior!
