Sega Takes Sonic To The Skies With AirAsia
By Lewis LarcombeVerified|October 16, 2024|0 Comment
Taking to the skies has never been this fast, nor this fun. AirAsia X has unveiled its much-anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog-themed plane, delighting fans of the blue blur with an experience that feels straight out of a video game. As part of a unique collaboration between AirAsia, SEGA, and ATLUS, the iconic Sonic charm was brought to life on flight D7 170 from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok—and I was lucky enough to be part of this high-speed adventure.
From the moment I arrived at the gate, Sonic mania was in full swing. Sonic-inspired displays were everywhere, and passengers were quick to snap photos with life-size cutouts of the speedy hedgehog and his companions, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and Amy Rose. Before even stepping onto the plane, we were handed special Sonic memorabilia, a nice touch that set the stage for what was to come.
As soon as I boarded the Airbus A330, it felt like I’d stepped into the colourful world of Sonic’s Green Hill Zone. The exterior boasted vibrant artwork of Sonic and his friends racing across the aircraft’s fuselage, while the interior continued the theme with Sonic stickers covering the seat-back tables, overhead compartments, and even the bathroom mirrors. AirAsia didn’t miss a single detail—each corner of the plane was draped in Sonic’s world, making for an experience that was not just a flight, but a full immersion.
To top off the atmosphere, Sonic’s classic theme song played both before takeoff and after landing, keeping the energy high throughout the journey. Of course, what’s an adventure without some fuel? Sonic’s Golden Ring Cakes were on the in-flight menu, and while I wasn’t a fan of the mango-lemon flavour combo (mangoes and I just don’t get along), I couldn’t deny the fun presentation. Paired with a Fizzy Iced Yuzu drink, it was a crowd-pleaser for everyone else, and the dessert has since become a popular option on select AirAsia Malaysia (AK) and AirAsia X Malaysia (D7) flights.
In true launch day fashion, passengers were treated to a sneak peek of upcoming collaboration merchandise, including a ‘Persona 5 Royal’ badge, hinting at future collaborations. Exclusive Sonic and Persona-themed items will be available on AirAsia flights starting early 2025—something fans of both franchises can look forward to.
The Sonic aircraft is already in operation, covering major cities across Southeast Asia and the Asia Pacific, including destinations like Bangkok, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, and Sydney. And if you’re looking forward to even more themed flights, AirAsia’s ‘Persona 5’ themed aircraft is set to take off this November.
Izal Azlee, Head of IP Development at AirAsia Brand Co., expressed his excitement, saying:
“Bringing Sonic and his friends to the skies is a dream come true. We’re thrilled to showcase such iconic characters on our flights, offering passengers a unique and memorable experience. Now, not only can you fly with AirAsia, but you can also travel with your favourite characters across the region.”
In the end, this trip wasn’t just about travelling from one city to another; it was about journeying through the world of Sonic in the most unexpected of places—the sky. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just someone looking for a quirky, fun flight, the Sonic-themed experience is one worth booking.
