Super Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai has ended his popular YouTube channel by officially announcing and teasing his next game.

In the final video from Masahiro Sakurai on his Creating Games YouTube channel, Sakurai revealed that he received a video game development proposal in July 2021 and that he began working on the game in April 2022.

About his new game, Sakurai only said that it should be announced “sooner or later” so there aren’t any specific details yet.

He said:

“I’d been given the OK to move forward with production, but it was going to take some time to assemble the right team. The target timeframe was April 2022. Until then, I would have to wait. I’m sure I could think of plenty more to discuss, but at present, I have no plans to continue. So please don’t ask for more episodes on this topic or that topic. I’ve already given this my best.”

His most recent game, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, was launched in 2018 and Sora from Kingdom Hearts was its final expansion fighter in 2021. The game ended up featuring 89 characters in its final roster, which includes fighters from The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, Banjo Kazooie, Dragon Quest, Persona, Mega Man, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Minecraft, and more.

Sakurai’s next game could be anything at this point, but it will very highly likely be in development for the Nintendo Switch 2 or whatever the next-gen version follow-up to the Nintendo Switch will be.
