The Mob War Escalates In The Latest Episode Of The Penguin
By Alleef Ashaari|October 21, 2024|0 Comment
The fifth episode of The Penguin Season 1 is now streaming on HBO GO and HBO (Astro Channel 411 / Unifi TV 401).
The events of The Penguin take place after 2022’s The Batman, as he rises to become the iconic villain from the comics. It will consist of eight episodes in its first season.
Subsequent new episodes continue every Monday, from 30 September 2024.
Check out my breakdown of The Penguin Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 3 and Episode 4 here.
Starring Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb (aka “The Penguin”), the DC Studios series continues filmmaker Matt Reeves’ The Batman epic crime saga that began with Warner Bros. Pictures’ global blockbuster The Batman. Developed by showrunner Lauren LeFranc, the series centers on the character played by Farrell in the film.
Cast includes Colin Farrell (Oz Cobb), Cristin Milioti (Sofia Falcone), Rhenzy Feliz (Victor Aguilar), Michael Kelly (Johnny Viti), Shohreh Aghdashloo (Nadia Maroni), Deirdre O’Connell (Francis Cobb), Clancy Brown (Salvatore Maroni), James Madio (Milos Grapa), Scott Cohen (Luca Falcone), Michael Zegen (Alberto Falcone), Carmen Ejogo (Eve Karlo) and Theo Rossi (Dr. Julian Rush).
The Batman Part 2 is slated to premiere in October 2026. In the meantime, you can head on over here for my breakdown of The Batman’s ending and post-credits, as well as what to expect from the upcoming sequel.
In the comics, Rex “The Lion” Calabrese was introduced in the New 52 DC universe in 2014 and first appeared in Batman Eternal #14. In both the show and comics, Calabrese was the kingpin of Gotham who was in charge before Batman’s time. He was retconned to be the father of Seline Kyle AKA Catwoman. However, in the universe of The Batman and The Penguin, Selina is the daughter of Carmine Falcone, as established in The Batman.
He was in The Batman and now he reprises his role in The Penguin.
He’s investigating the gassing of the Falcone family and the disappearance of Johnny Viti, which we know that Sofia Falcone is responsible for (from the end of last episode).
Oz makes his move against the Maroni family by making a hit at Sal Maroni at Blackgate and kidnapping his son (Taj Maroni) to get more of the Bliss drugs from the Maroni family.
He also kills Taj and his mother, Nadia Maroni, by literally burning them alive.
However, it turns out later that Sal Maroni somehow survived the assassination attempt on him.
So, she’s now Sofia Gigante, the head of the Gigante family.
Oh, and she kills Johnny Viti in the process as well, so there’s no one in the Falcone family to challenge her anymore.
It looks like the Penguin’s plans aren’t going to go as smoothly as he expected.
It’s revealed that Oz and his mother also grew up in Crown Point, just like Victor Aguilar. Oz lost his brothers when he was a kid, and this place reminds him (and his mother) of that.
It looks like Oz will be using the abandoned Gotham sewers as his new base of operations.
This feels like a throwback to the Tim Burton’s Batman Returns version of the character, who also had his base of operations in the sewers.
There you have it, folks. Only three episodes left after this and the mob war is escalating fast. So, where is the Batman in all this? Is he simply ignoring this new mob war?
Until next week, excelsior!
