Sony Eyes FromSoftware Parent Company Kadokawa For Acquisition
By Lewis Larcombe|November 20, 2024|0 Comment
Sony is reportedly in talks to acquire Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company behind industry heavyweights like FromSoftware (Elden Ring), Spike Chunsoft (Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero), and several anime production houses.
Earlier this week, Reuters revealed that Sony had issued a “letter of intent” to Kadokawa, sparking acquisition rumours. Following this, Kadokawa CEO Takeshi Natsuno addressed the situation after the company’s stock prices skyrocketed by 23%, hitting an all-time high.
“There have been articles about Sony acquiring Kadokawa Corporation. However, the company has not made any such announcement. We’ve received an initial letter of intent regarding the potential purchase of our shares, but no decision has been reached. Any updates will be communicated promptly and appropriately.”
This acquisition could be a game-changer for Sony, further cementing its dominance in the gaming and media industries. Kadokawa’s extensive portfolio includes a majority stake in FromSoftware, creators of beloved franchises like Dark Souls and Armored Core, as well as studios responsible for hits like Octopath Traveler and Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero.
With investors buzzing and stock values soaring, the Sony-Kadokawa deal could mark a significant shift in the industry, setting the stage for Sony to gain even greater control over gaming and anime’s future.
