M6 World Championship Swiss Stage Scores Big With Southeast Asia’s Loyal Fans
By Lewis LarcombeVerified|December 7, 2024|0 Comment
The Swiss Stage of the M6 World Championship wrapped up on 5 November, trimming the competition down to the final eight teams vying for esports glory. With its Southeast Asian fanbase leading the charge, the tournament is on track to rival the all-time greats in viewership numbers.
Returning to Malaysia, where the inaugural Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) World Championship debuted, M6’s grand finale will unfold across two iconic venues: the IOI Grand Exhibition & Convention Center for the Knockout Stage and the Axiata Arena for the climactic Semifinals and Grand Final.
This year, MOONTON Games shook things up with a revamped format. Gone is last year’s GSL-style Group Stage; in its place, the Swiss Stage made its debut. The new approach ensures every team gets more game time, giving fan favourites better odds of advancing. And guess what? It’s paying off.
Compared to M5, this year’s Swiss Stage smashed records. Shorter matches (best-of-ones and best-of-threes) meant quicker airtime—nearly seven hours less than in 2023—but fans stayed glued to their screens. Led by Indonesian and Malaysian viewers, the tournament’s popularity soared, thanks to standout teams like RRQ Hoshi, Selangor Red Giants, Team Vamos, and Team Liquid ID, all now heading to the Knockout Stage.
Some matches even broke the 2 million peak viewers (PV) barrier. The most-watched game was Team Liquid ID vs. Aurora Gaming, a thrilling showdown between powerhouses from Indonesia and the Philippines. These two regions are MLBB royalty, and their clashes never fail to captivate.
RRQ Hoshi deserves a special shoutout. The beloved Indonesian squad, making its M-series return since M4, has seen a resurgence, featuring in three of the five most-watched games. Their run has fueled a staggering 78% increase in Indonesian Hours Watched (HW) and an 86.7% jump in PV compared to last year’s Group Stage.
Malaysia hasn’t been left behind, either. The stellar performances of Selangor Red Giants—the country’s first international MLBB champions—and Team Vamos have boosted Bahasa Malaysia’s HW and PV figures by 80% and 78%, respectively. Could 2024 finally be the year Malaysia clinches its maiden world title?
Meanwhile, the Philippines is keeping pace. Filipino fans showed up in force, with Tagalog viewership numbers jumping 76.2%. With FNATIC Onic PH securing a playoff spot, their presence could further drive record-breaking numbers as the tournament progresses.
As the competition heats up, M6 is poised to potentially surpass M5, currently the fifth most-watched esports event ever, in peak concurrent viewers. With fan-favourite matchups and a climactic Knockout Stage on the horizon, the 2024 edition could make history.
The Knockout Stage kicks off on 7 December and runs until 15 December. Check out the full schedule on Esports Charts and prepare for some epic Mobile Legends action.
