Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Ending Explained & Post-Credits Breakdown
By Alleef Ashaari|December 20, 2024|0 Comment
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is now showing in US cinemas (26 December 2024 in Malaysia). In the meantime, check out our spoiler-free review of the movie by heading over here.
The synopsis reads:
Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.
Director Jeff Fowler returns along with our all-star cast including Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally, Lee Majdoub, newcomers Alyla Browne and Krysten Ritter, with Keanu Reeves joining the franchise as Shadow the Hedgehog.
Head on below for the breakdown:
The movie begins with Shadow The Hedgehog breaking out of his containment at a GUN facility. It’s later revealed that he’s been trapped there for 50 years and now he wants revenge against GUN for indirectly causing the death of Maria. Shadow’s backstory is this; he fell to Earth via a meteor 50 years ago and the scientists at GUN began to experiment on him. However, they were afraid of him and his dangerous powers. Maria, daughter of Gerald Robotnik, was the only one not afraid of Shadow, and she became his only friend. One day, GUN decides that Shadow is too dangerous. While Shadow, Maria and Gerald Robotnik were escaping, a GUN soldier accidentally shot an explosive canister, which resulted in the explosion that killed Maria. After that incident, Shadow was captured by GUN and kept in a containment chamber until he eventually broke loose.
In Shadow The Hedgehog 3, Gerald Robotnik reveals himself to still be alive after all this time and wants revenge against the world for the death of Maria. He created a Death Star-like weapon called the Eclipse Cannon years ago for GUN and plans to use it to destroy the world. However, to use the weapon, he needs two keycards. Most of the movie involves Team Sonic and the Robotniks racing to obtain the two keycards.
The movie ends with Shadow and Dr. Ivo Robotnik turning against Gerald Robotnik and sacrificing themselves to destroy the Eclipse Cannon.
During the third act of Sonic The Hedgehog 3, both Robotniks get to don their iconic video game accurate suits.
When Shadow almost kills Tom (James Marsden) during the movie, Sonic uses the Master Emerald to become Super Sonic. However, Shadow also gets his hands on them, so he also turns into Super Shadow. At first, they fight each other in a Dragon Ball-like brawl before Sonic convinced Shadow to work together.
Also, there’s this one moment in the movie where it seems like they recreated the iconic cover of Sonic Adventure 2, which is, of course, the very first appearance of Shadow The Hedgehog.
Just like we waited for Captain America to finally say “Avengers Assemble” in Avengers Endgame, Sonic finally says his iconic catchphrase “Gotta Go Fast” in Sonic The Hedgehog 3 in a scene with Shadow. Shadow even makes fun of his catchphrase.
In the first Sonic The Hedgehog 3 post-credits scene, Sonic gets attacked by a bunch of Mecha Sonics (or Metal Sonics) before Amy Rose comes to his rescue.
Amy Rose is another prominent character from the Sonic games, she’s a pink hedgehog basically the self-proclaimed girlfriend of Sonic The Hedgehog. She often wields a hammer as her weapon of choice.
In the second Sonic The Hedgehog 3 post-credits, the scene confirms that Shadow The Hedgehog survived the explosion during his sacrifice to stop Gerald Robotnik and the Eclipse Cannon and he is still alive.
