Superman Trailer Breakdown & Easter Eggs: Krypto, Metamorpho & More

Warner Bros. and DC Studios have unveiled the first trailer for the upcoming Superman movie directed by James Gunn.

Check out the Superman trailer breakdown by the ComicsLord below:

The Daily Planet, Clark Kent And Lois Lane

The trailer begins with Superman falling to the ground, and then we get glimpses of the Daily Planet offices, Lois Lane (played by Rachel Brosnahan in the second pic below) and Clark Kent (played by David Corenswet in third pic below).

Clark Kent With Jonathan Kent

Pruitt Taylor Vince plays Jonathan Kent AKA Pa Kent (Clark Kent’s adoptive father).

Krypto The Superdog Saves Superman

Superman calls for Krypto The Superdog to save him. This is perhaps Krypto’s first proper debut in a movie (if I’m not mistaken). It’s nice to see the good doggo.

Superman Saves A Girl From A Monster Or Kaiju Of Some Sort

Who or what is the monster?

Our First Look At Lex Luthor

We get a glimpse of the Luthorcorp building in Metropolis and then Lex Luthor himself (played by Nicholas Hoult).

Lex Luthor Must Be Responsible For Some Kind Of Smear Campaign Against Superman

The people hate him for some reason, perhaps Lex Luthor has painted Superman as a dangerous alien threat.

We See Superman Entering A Stagg Industries Building

We see the Stagg Industries logo behind Superman. This is significant because Stagg Industries is owned by Simon Stagg, who is responsible for inadvertently turning Rex Mason into Metamorpho. Metamorpho will also be in the movie, played by Anthony Carrigan.

Our First Look At Green Lantern Guy Gardner And Hawkgirl

We see Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner AKA the third human Green Lantern in the DC universe after Hal Jordan and John Stewart. He’s known for being an abrasive and impulsive asshole.

We also get to see the beautiful and talented Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl.

There are multiple versions of Hawkgirl in the comics, but this is probably Kendra Saunders, the modern and current version (and not Shayera Hol, the one that was in the popular Justice League animated series from the 2000s).

They both wear similar uniforms because they’re part of the DCU’s Justice League International team, which is apparently under Luthorcorp.

What’s That Behind Them In The Distance Attacking Metropolis?

It looks a lot like Solaris the Tyrant Sun. Solaris is a Superman villain who’s basically a robotic artificial living sun.

That’s Probably Kelex

Kelex is a robot that was created by Jor-El and would later become one of Superman’s assistants at the Fortress Of Solitude. However, in this scene, it looks like someone or something attacked Kelex. The live-action version also looks more humanoid.

Our First Look At Metamorpho

This is our first look at Rex Mason AKA Metamorpho. Played by Anthony Carrigan, he turned into a freakish-looking individual capable of shifting his body into various chemicals and forms after being cursed by an ancient artifact that he was retrieving for Simon Stagg AKA the CEO of Stagg Industries (that was seen earlier in the trailer and mentioned above).

This Could Be Ulysses Or Ultraman

According to reports, this is supposed to be Ulysses. In the comics, he’s a relatively new Superman villain who made his debut during the New 52. The character began as a human named Neil Quinn but his parents sent him to another dimension to save him, where he acquired powers making him as strong as Superman and capable of absorbing energy.

This could also potentially be Ultraman (because James Gunn has yet to confirm who the character is). In the comics, Ultraman is the alternate universe version of Superman who’s evil and the leader of the Crime Syndicate (an evil version of the Justice League).

Our First Look At Mr. Terrific

We see Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt AKA Mister Terrific.

We also get to see him use his creation, the T-Spheres (those machine balls), to form an energy shield.

The Trailer Ends With Superman And Lois Lane Embracing Each Other, Full Of Hope

That was a beautiful trailer that felt as hopeful as Superman should have always been.

The synopsis reads:

“James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a SUPERMAN who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”

Back in July 2024, the Superman movie finished filming.

Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern/Guy Gardner), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), David Corenswet (Superman / Clark Kent), Milly Alcock, (Kara Zor-El/Supergirl), Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as archaeologist Rex Mason AKA Metamorpho, and more.

Superman is slated to premiere on 11 July 2025. Superman will be the first movie in the newly rebooted DCU or DC Universe. You can read more about that in detail by heading over here for my previous coverage.

Recently at SDCC 2024, Gunn also unveiled the official logo for DC Studios and the new DCU (full story here).

The current DC Studios slate is:

  • SUPERMAN – July 11, 2025
  • SUPERGIRL – June 26, 2026
  • CLAYFACE – September 11, 2026
  • THE BATMAN 2 – October 2, 2026
  • DYNAMIC DUO – June 30, 2028

The Creature Commandos series on Max Malaysia officially kicked off the new DCU or DC Universe, with the upcoming Superman movie in July 2025 set to be the first live-action movie. You can read more about the rest of the planned movies and TV shows in the DCU by heading over here.
