This Unreleased Game Is Already Getting A Live-Action Movie Adaptation

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 isn’t even out yet and it already has a live-action movie adaptation in the works.

According to Variety, developer Sandfall Interactive is teaming up with entertainment media company Story Kitchen for the movie version of the game.

Story Kitchen founders Dmitri M. Johnson & Mike Goldberg said:

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Sandfall Interactive to bring the rich, immersive world of ‘Expedition 33’ to the big screen. The game’s compelling narrative and complex characters provide a solid foundation for a cinematic experience that will resonate with both gamers and moviegoers alike.”

The story in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 centres on the Paintress, a god-like figure who annually paints a cursed number on her monolith, causing all individuals of that age to vanish. As the number decreases each year, humanity faces impending extinction. Players follow Expedition 33 on a mission to end this cycle by confronting the Paintress before she paints death again.

At the time of writing, the Clair Obscur Expedition 33 movie doesn’t have any directors or cast members attached yet.

Sandfall Interactive’s CEO/Creative Director, Guillaume Broche said:

“Partnering with Story Kitchen allows us to expand the universe of ‘Clair Obscur’ beyond the gaming realm. Their expertise in storytelling and passion for our vision make them the perfect team to translate our game into a captivating film.”

Story Kitchen is also currently working on new adaptations of the Tomb Raider franchise, including the recently-released animated Netflix TV series as well as upcoming live-action TV shows and movies at Amazon MGM Studios. The company is also currently developing a Just Cause movie for Universal with Ángel Manuel Soto directing and 87North co-producing; a Streets Of Rage movie for Lionsgate with Escape Artists co-producing; and a Toejam & Earl movie for Amazon MGM Studios with Steph Curry co-producing.

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 will launch for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, as well as Xbox Game Pass, on 24 April 2025. It is a turn-based RPG with real-time mechanics.
