After 35 Years, The Music Makers Of Anime FLCL Have Disbanded
By Jonathan ToyadVerified|February 1, 2025|0 Comment
If you are a fan of long-running anime anthology FLCL, you probably enjoy the soundtrack composed by alternative rock band The Pillows. Sadly, the rock group has officially announced their disbandment.
After 35 years, and after a recent show in Yokohama, The Pillows announced today on X that the group has officially parted ways. No major reason was given, though the band members said they hope to meet their fans again through their individual activities in the future. After being together for 35 years, it’s only natural for band members Sawao Yamanaka, Yoshiaki Manabe, and Shinichiro Sato to head off in different directions, be it music or otherwise.
“Thank you for always supporting the pillows.
This is a sudden announcement, but the pillows officially disbanded following their show at KT Zepp Yokohama on January 31st.
The members sincerely thank all the fans for their constant support over the past 35 years. These years have been a truly memorable journey, and it’s all thanks to the fans.
The band hesitates to use the word “disbanded” as it is a strong term. However, they decided to use it rather than leave room for expectations of a future reunion.
The members are deeply grateful to the fans who valued their music and supported them throughout their career. They hope to meet the fans again through their individual activities in the future.
Thank you once again for supporting the pillows for 35 years.”

The Pillows, who formed in 1989, performed most of the soundtrack for FLCL (OVA) in 2000, with the ED track Ride on Shooting Star being a fan favourite. The band also made theme songs and OSTs for FLCL Progressive, FLCL Alternative, FLCL Grunge, and FLCL Shoegaze. Apart from that series, the band has made tunes for BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad, Moonlight Mile, Ahiru no Sora, and Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer.
