Nintendo Gears Up for the Scalper Wars: Switch 2 Edition
By Lewis Larcombe|February 4, 2025|0 Comment
It looks like Nintendo has learned its lesson. After the original Switch’s launch turned into a Black Friday brawl thanks to scalpers, the company is now taking precautions to ensure history doesn’t repeat itself with the Switch 2.
Company president Shuntaro Furukawa recently spoke to the Japanese press, reassuring eager gamers that Nintendo is preparing a stockpile big enough to (hopefully) satisfy demand. In other words, they’re trying to keep resellers from turning the Switch 2 into the next luxury commodity—because let’s face it, no one wants to fork out three times the retail price on eBay.
“We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated to date (regarding scalpers and the like). We are making preparations,” Furukawa stated, as translated by VGC via Nikkei. In short, Nintendo is bringing its A-game against those looking to make a quick buck off desperate players.
After more than a year of leaks and speculation, Nintendo finally confirmed the existence of the Switch 2 last month. A full reveal is set for April, with hands-on previews to follow. Reports suggest Nintendo originally aimed for a late 2024 launch but opted to prioritise stockpile security and a solid launch lineup instead. Essentially, they’re trying to avoid a repeat of the PS5 fiasco, where consoles were rarer than unicorns.
Market predictions paint a pretty picture for the Switch 2’s future. Circana expects over four million units to be sold in the US alone in 2025—assuming it launches in the first half of the year—making up about a third of all console sales that year. Meanwhile, DFC Intelligence estimates Switch 2 sales will surpass 80 million units by 2028, outpacing the original Switch’s first three years on the market (55.77 million).
Japanese analyst Yasuda Hideki has an even bolder prediction, expecting the Switch 2 to move six million units within its first three months. Given Nintendo’s track record, that doesn’t sound too far-fetched.
Meanwhile, the current Switch is still raking in the cash. Nintendo confirmed that 4.82 million units were sold over the recent holiday season, bringing its lifetime total to a whopping 150.86 million. If it wants to dethrone the Nintendo DS (154 million) and the PlayStation 2 (160 million) as the best-selling console of all time, it still has a bit more work to do.
And for those worried about their beloved Switch 1 becoming obsolete overnight, Furukawa assured fans that Nintendo will continue supporting it even after the Switch 2 arrives. So, no need to panic—yet.
