LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Review – Bat Might

Platform(s): PC (version reviewed), Xbox Series, PlayStation 5
Genre: Action, Adventure, Open World, Comic Books, LEGO, All-Ages

You know what they say: you’ve played one LEGO action co-op all-ages game, you’ve played them all. It’s only the outside bits and context that’s usually different. In this case, it’s a Batman game focused on all the live-action movies with comic bits thrown in.

TT Games made the smart choice in making this new LEGO Batman title an open-world action adventure experience, using the Batman Arkham games’ combat mechanics and making it family friendly and all-ages (read: easy and accessible). Throughout the 8 or so hours playing through the game, the game does trigger that dopamine in my system that makes me break every LEGO piece to get studs. Every. Single. One.

I Am The Night

Whether it’s in a story mission that retells The Batman, the Christopher Nolan films, and the Tim Burton flicks in one continuous swoop that makes sense in the game (and it does), or during the open world bits where I drive around in a Batmobile (or any Bat car or vehicle I unlocked) and just bust up crime and Riddler challenges, breaking stuff for studs is still fun. Granted, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is still adhering to the formula of past TT Games LEGO titles, but you can’t fault its production values and consistent comedy bits in-between its conjoined plotlines.

Having said that, there are weird and obvious omissions. Why the huge focus on just the Batman films instead of combining them with iconic comic book storylines? Why is there no online multiplayer? And why is this all-ages game so expensive?

While LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is what you expect from a LEGO action adventure game, kudos to TT Games for implementing Batman: Arkham quadrology mechanics in its retelling of the Batman mythos (albeit in all-ages family friendly form). Even the highest difficulty should pose no challenge for seasoned gamers, but that really isn’t the point of these all-ages titles, right?

What matters is that they’re still fun either solo or with friends, and its celebration of all things Batman is well-sorted for the most part. Whether you’re a comic-loving guy/gal, a Batman movie buff, or someone who just casually likes the Batman shows out there, you’ll find a lot to love in this new LEGO Batman title. The price tag? The formulaic approach overall? Not so much. But everything else? Holy tribute, Batman!

Final Score: 70/100
