Fortnite Will Not Be On Google Play Store Because Epic Wants More Money
By Team KKP|August 4, 2018|2 Comments
We’re on the fence on whether this piece of news is good or bad. Epic Games recently confirmed on The Verge that it will be selling the Android version of its hit game Fortnite. But it won’t be on the Google Play store.
The reason? Because Epic Games does not want Google to take a 30% cut for in-app purchases for games sold through Google Play. Here’s what Epic Games’ CEO Tim Sweeney has to say:
“The 30 percent store tax is a high cost in a world where game developers’ 70 percent must cover all the cost of developing, operating, and supporting their games.”
He added that the amount is disproportionate to the services Google provides on open platforms like Android where the company that maintains the operating system is separate from the hardware manufacturer.
The big question is “where can you get Fortnite on Android, assuming that it’s out now?” Well, they may need to run it in a way to bypass Google Play, but that means less security and privacy protections; that could be extra work on Epic Games. There are also other Android propriety app stores like Samsung’s app store (for Samsung phones/tablets), or even Amazon’s app store. You also have other app stores like GetJar, Mobogenie, and Uptodown. Google Play may be the go-to place, but if you want your Fortnite fix on Android devices, you may have to search elsewhere.
And we still don’t have a date for the Android version of Fortnite.
