By Alleef Ashaari|May 27, 2022|8 Comments
The first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi is now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar Malaysia. l’ll be discussing heavy spoilers so if you haven’t seen it or want to avoid spoilers, now’s your chance to stop reading.
The limited six-episode series follows the titular Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in exile, set 10 years after the events of Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith. It is executive-produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Deborah Chow, McGregor and series writer Joby Harold. Deborah Chow is the showrunner and she directed all six episodes.
Courtesy of Disney+ Hotstar Malaysia, we were given the opportunity to interview none other than the former Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and current Dark Lord Of The Sith Darth Vader; Hayden Christensen himself.

After a Star Wars Prequel recap, the episode begins with a flashback to a group of younglings trying to survive Order 66. We get a glimpse of the chaos inside the Jedi Temple more clearly than in Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith, with Clone Troopers killing all the Jedi inside.
That was fast, it’s only Episode 1 and the Inquisitors have already landed on Tatooine. These include the Grand Inquisitor himself (Rupert Friend) in the middle, the Fifth Brother (Sung Kang) on his left, and Reva Sevander the Third Sister (Moses Ingram) on his right. The Inquisitors are tasked with hunting down Jedi survivors of Order 66. They were originally introduced in the Star Wars Rebels animated series.
Th Inquisitors find a Jedi survivor named Nari but he manages to get away. What a coincidence that there’s more than one Jedi hiding on Tatooine (the other being Obi-Wan Kenobi, of course).
We meet Obi-Wan Kenobi for the first time since Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith, and he’s apparently working as a miner or something. Keep in mind that this takes place 10 years after the events of that movie.
Obi-Wan keeps tabs on young Luke Skywalker from a distance, and this probably reminded him of how Anakin was a pod racer when he was a kid too.
When the Jedi survivor named Nari finds Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan introduces himself as Ben, which is the name he used in the Star Wars Original Trilogy. It looks like we won’t be getting any convoluted or dumb origin for him taking on the name Ben, unlike Solo A Star Wars Story.
This is definitely a pleasant surprise. We get to meet a young Leia Skywalker AKA Leia Organa (which is her adoptive family’s name). She is played by Vivien Lyra Blair.
The thing that Obi-Wan buys from Teeka is the same toy that Luke plays with in Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope.
Owen Lars admonishes Obi-Wan Kenobi for coming near Luke Skywalker, especially after what happened to Anakin Skywalker (who is now Darth Vader).
Hey, it’s the whole Organa family. Jimmy Smits reprises his role as Senator Bail Organa from the Star Wars Prequels. Simone Kessell plays Breha Organa.
Leia gets kidnapped and it’s up to Obi-Wan to help her. What’s interesting about this scene is how it parallels similar events from Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope. In this, the Organa family sends a hologram, with Breha Organa saying “She needs you, Obi-Wan.”
In Episode IV, Leia’s hologram message to Obi-Wan states that “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.”
This situation is a lot similar to Spider-Man’s origin. Obi-Wan chose not to help Nari and he died because of his inaction. With great power comes great responsibility, Obi-Wan.
It seems like Reva was the one who hired the mercenaries to kidnap Leia and it also seems like she knows that Leia is Anakin’s daughter. However, does she know that Darth Vader is Anakin Skywalker? Or does she think that Anakin is dead like everyone’s else? This is all a bit suspicious.
From all the trailers, many fans were assuming that this planet would be Coruscant, but it turns out that it’s actually a planet named Daiyu. At the start of Episode 2, Obi-Wan is no longer on Tatooine.
It looks like the Empire abandoned Clone Troopers who got old. Obi-Wan meets a former Clone Trooper and a Clone War vet asking for scraps on the streets of Daiyu. It’s a heartbreaking scene that mirrors real life and what happens to real life war veterans. However, it’s fun seeing Temuera Morrison (The Book Of Boba Fett) in this short cameo.
He also seems to be wearing the 501st Legion armour, which means that he must have been part of the legion under Anakin Skywalker and Commander Rex during the Clone Wars.
Kumail Nanjiani plays a con-man named Haja, who is pretending to be a Jedi to help people for compensation.
Obi-Wan’s position is similar to Leia’s in the hologram in Episode IV.
Now that makes more sense. That was sneaky, writers.
He doesn’t say her name, but we all know what he meant when he said that Leia is just as fearless and stubborn as “she” was. It’s a heartbreaking scene for fans of the Star Wars Prequels.
Reva tells Obi-Wan that Anakin is still alive.
This is confusing. Reva kills the Grand Inquisitor. However, in the Star Wars Rebels animated series, he died in Season 1 Episodes 1 ‘Fire Across The Galaxy’ after losing to Kanan Jarrus and committing suicide.
Perhaps this explains why the Obi-Wan Kenobi version of the Grand Inquisitor looks so different from his Star Wars Rebels counterpart. Perhaps they’re not even the same person? Rupert Friend plays the Obi-Wan Kenobi version, while Jason Isaacs played the Rebels version, but fans assumed that they were one and the same before Obi-Wan Kenobi premiered.
At last, the end of Episode 2 gives us a glimpse at Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader. We see him without his armour healing in the bacta tank, as he opens his eyes.
We have four episodes left and I hope they’re going to be just as epic as the first two. Until then, excelsior! Oh, and don’t forgot, Episode 3 onwards will premiere on Wednesdays starting from next week, not Fridays.
