Back in June 2022, Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation announced three new projects in development during a special presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. They also revealed that Lauren Montgomery, who previously worked on both Avatar The Last Airbender and The Legend Of Korra, will direct the first of the three planned Avatar The Last Airbender movies.
Other Avatar The Last Airbender veterans will also be involved with the production, including Avatar The Last Airbender and The Legend Of Korra creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino. They will be the producers of the first movie alongside Eric Coleman, who served as the executive producer and production manager of Avatar The Last Airbender series.
“As original creators, Mike and Bryan expand the Avatar universe with us, we’re keeping it all in the family with Lauren bringing the same kind of expert, beautiful work she did on the original series to her new directing duties on the forthcoming theatrical,” said Ramsey Naito, President of Animation & Development at Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation.
Avatar The Last Airbender originally aired for three seasons on Nickelodeon from February 2005 to July 2008. The sequel series Legend Of Korra aired for four seasons from April 2012 to December 2014. The upcoming Avatar Netflix series is completely independent of the new Avatar Studios deal and that the live-action series is still moving forward at the streaming platform. However, original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are no longer working on Netflix’s live-action adaptation.
