Valorant Champions Tour 2022: North American Last Chance Qualifier – China’s EDward Gaming Qualify For Champions
By Lewis "lickety" Larcombe|August 15, 2022|0 Comment
China will finally show what they got as their top seed, EDward Gaming secures the last East Asian slot at Valorant Champions in September.
With high hopes that they will be able to obtain visas allowing the team to go to Istanbul, the roster will be Haodong “Haodong” Guo, Donghao “Life” Qu, Shunzhi “CHICHOO” Wan, Senxu “nobody” Wang and Yongkang “ZmjjKK” Zheng. Following them will be their coaching staff in Shijun “Muggle” Tang and former Taiwanese Overwatch player, Wen-Hsin “AfteR” Lo.
EDward Gaming‘s road to Champions was clean, to say the least, having not dropped a single map the entire tournament. In their first match, they faced On Sla2ers where they dismantled them and send the Korean squad into the lower bracket 2–0.
The Japanese side in REJECT would be EDG’s next opponent. EDG dominated Map 1 on Fracture 13–3. REJECT managed to bounce back in Game 2 bringing it close but no cigar with the final scoreline being 13–11.
In the upper bracket final, the Chinese powerhouse would go on to face the tournament favourites in Northeption, a team that just came back from competing at VCT Masters 2 in Copenhagen. Game 1 was on Ascent which EDG took 13–8. The main talking point was Game 2 where the Japanese side gave EDG a run for their money as they push Bind into long overtime but EDG managed to close out the map 21–19.
After being sent into the lower bracket finals, Northeption would be knocked out by none other than EDG’s very first opponent, On Sla2ers meaning that the Koreans would get a chance at getting revenge on the eventual winners. After being annihilated in Game 1 on Fracture, 13–4, On Sla2ers almost managed to take Game 2, Haven but fell short 11–13. With EDG at map point but it had seemed that EDG had a firm grasp on the momentum and closed out Game 3, Split 13–9 solidifying their spot at Valorant Champions.
This will be the first international event a Chinese team will play so analysts and fans alike look forward to seeing how the Chinese deal with the rest of the world, or how the rest of the world will deal with Chinese Valorant.
