Two Obscure Sega Games Are Getting The Movie Adaptation Treatment

Sega has announced two new game movies they want to make: Space Channel 5 and Comix Zone.

In a recent statement, Sega confirmed it’s partnering with production company Picturestart to develop film adaptations of the two obscure 90s titles (via The Hollywood Reporter). Producing these films will be Sega’s Toru Nakahara, with Space Channel 5 game design director Takumi Yoshinaga to be involved with the game’s movie adaptation. Sega producer Kagasei Shimomura will join the team for Comix Zone.

Space Channel 5 will be a comedy dance-filled show tone-wise with the following synopsis:

“[This is a story of] a hapless fast-food worker who is recruited by a freedom reporter from the future to save the world from aliens using the one thing that unites all people on the planet: our love of silly viral dances.”

Comix Zone will have the following story:

“[Comix Zone] follows a jaded comic book creator and a young, queer writer of colour who, when sucked into the final issue of his popular series, must put aside their differences to stop a dangerous supervillain from sowing complete destruction.”

Space Channel 5 was a rhythm game for Sega Dreamcast where you play space reporter Ulala as she blasts music-loving aliens with her blaster in simple Simon Says-esque gameplay. Michael Jackson did make a cameo in the game. Comix Zone was a 2D action beat-em-up title in 1995 where you play a comic artist stuck in his own created world and fight mutants. The game was notorious for its difficulty, even among challenging games in that era.

In any case, it’s rather daring of Sega to adapt these niche games. Perhaps it’s due to the huge success of both Sonic The Hedgehog movies that the company is willing to take chances.
