Disney, Fox Sued for US$1 Billion by Genting Over Malaysian Theme Park

Remember the planned world’s first 20th Century Fox theme park in Malaysia? Yeah, it’s not happening, folks. Disney and Fox are facing a US$1 billion lawsuit by Genting for backing away from the contract.
The 20th Century Fox World Malaysian theme park was initially announced way back in 2013, and it was set to feature popular Fox properties like Ice Age and Planet of the Apes. Now thanks in part to Disney’s acquisition of Fox, the Fox theme park looks to be the first casualty.
According to Variety, Genting claims that Fox has allegedly been deliberately delaying the project for quite a while now, by withholding approvals for certain decisions and not cooperating with the theme park’s development.
Genting also stated that Disney wants to terminate the Fox theme park because they didn’t want to be associated with a gambling company like GENM, which didn’t fit with the megacorporation’s family-friendly brand strategy.
At the time of writing, Fox has yet to comment on the issue. The official case name for the lawsuit is Genting Malaysia Bhd v Fox Entertainment Group LLC et al, U.S. District Court, Central District of California, No. 18-09866.
Now that we won’t be getting a Fox theme park after all, whatever happened to the planned Ubisoft Malaysian theme park? In 2015, the game developer/publisher announced a “10,000-square-meter indoor complex featuring rides, shows, and other attractions, all built around Ubisoft’s games and characters” in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
However, three years later and we still haven’t heard anything new about the project, despite the fact that it was slated to open in 2020. It seems that Malaysia will soon turn into a wasteland of abandoned theme parks, perfectly suited for filming post-apocalyptic movies.
