G4 Is Shutting Down Less Than A Year After Relaunch Comeback

After officially returning in November 2021, G4 is shutting down again, as Comcast’s Spectacor division is pulling the plug on the video game-centric network G4 TV. According to Deadline, Spectacor CEO Dave Scott sent a memo to his employees explaining that the company’s investment and efforts to revive the network just didn’t gain traction.

The new version of G4 included a revived version of the original G4 mainstays such as Attack of the Show! and Xplay, plus comedy Boosted, Japanese competition series Ninja Warrior, esports competitions and Dungeons & Dragons limited series.

This news appears to have come as a surprise, as several G4 employees such as G4 host Jirard the Completionist revealed that he discovered the shutdown via a tweet, while Emily Rose found out about the news via the Deadline article, as she was flying home from her grandfather’s funeral.

Here is Scott’s full memo, which Deadline obtained from a source:

Team:

As you know, G4 was re-introduced last year to tap into the popularity of
gaming. We invested to create the new G4 as an online and TV destination for fans
to be entertained, be inspired, and connect with gaming content.

Over the past several months, we worked hard to generate that interest in G4, but
viewership is low and the network has not achieved sustainable financial
results. This is certainly not what we hoped for, and, as a result, we have made the
very difficult decision to discontinue G4’s operations, effective immediately.
I know this is disappointing news, and I’m disappointed, too. I want to thank you
and everyone on the G4 team for the hard work and commitment to the network.

Our human resources team is reaching out to you to provide you with support,
discuss other opportunities that may be available, and answer any questions you
may have.

Thank you again for all of your hard work for G4.

Sincerely,

Dave Scott
Chairman and CEO
Comcast Spectacor

G4 was a video games-focused TV network that ran from 2002 to 2014. One of its most popular programs was X-Play, which ran from 1998 to 2013 and featured everything from game reviews to gaming-related skits. Throughout the years, it was hosted by Adam Sessler, Morgan Webb, Blair Herter, Jessica Chobot, Lauren Fielder, Kristin Adams, and more.

Meanwhile, Attack of the Show! was a live TV show which focused on pop culture in general, discussing news headlines, tech, movies, games, and more. It aired from 2005 to 2013 and was hosted by Kevin Pereira, Olivia Munn, Alison Haislip, Candace Bailey, Sara Jean Underwood, Kevin Rose, and more.

The G4 network also helped launch the careers of Geoff Keighley, Olivia Munn and other notable figures in the gaming coverage industry.
