It’s a bittersweet announcement for Cobra Kai and Karate Kid fans as Netflix has announced that Cobra Kai Season 6 will be the final season of the series.
In a tweet, Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg said:
“Reacquainting the world with the Karate Kid universe has been our humble honor. Making Cobra Kai has allowed us to join the same hallowed dojo once inhabited by the great Robert Mark Kamen, John Avildsen, Jerry Weintraub, and all the amazing original cast members. It has also enabled us to play sensei, expanding the original storylines and birthing a new generation of underdogs. We’ve never once taken this opportunity for granted.
“Our day one goal with Cobra Kai has always been to end it on our terms, leaving the Valley in the time and place we’ve always imagined. So it is with immense pride and thankfulness that we are able to announce that achievement. The upcoming season six will mark the conclusion of Cobra Kai.”
Cobra Kai is a series that was developed for YouTube Red by Sony that is a direct sequel to the original Karate Kid films by Robert Mark Kamen. Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprised their roles of Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence from the original films released in 1984. After two seasons on YouTube Red, the series moved to Netflix where it has aired for three additional seasons.
The series takes place 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament. All five seasons of Cobra Kai are currently streaming on Netflix. Check out our review of Season 5 here.
One reason why the series is ending could be attributed to the fact that Sony Pictures is currently working on a new Karate Kid movie that’s not related to Cobra Kai.
There is currently no release date or release window for Cobra Kai Season 6.
