Overwatch 2 Developer Promises Ultimate Charge Adjustments In Season 3
By Lewis "lickety" Larcombe|January 25, 2023|0 Comment
Overwatch 2 players are reporting balancing issues as the second competitive season ends, but developers have announced plans to address them in the upcoming season 3.
In particular, developer Jared Neuss recently acknowledged a content creator’s concern about the ultimate charge rates for DPS characters and stated that the development team is working on changes to this aspect of the game.
Changes are coming for this in S3! Details will be in the patch notes, if not earlier.
The lack of acknowledgement isn't a lack of concern, just to be clear. It's much less interesting than that:
We need better ways to communicate with players about issues like this.

In case you’re unaware, the release of Overwatch 2 saw that each hero role would receive a unique passive ability. For DPS heroes, they would retain up to 30% of their ultimate ability charge when switching to a new character.
The intention behind this change was to encourage counter-picking heroes, which is a key strategy in Overwatch that sets it apart from other first-person shooter titles. However, it also means that the importance of choosing the right composition from the start of the game is diminished and that more DPS ultimate abilities are used on average per game.
The addition of the passive ability for DPS heroes in Overwatch 2 has also brought new opportunities for Tank players. With the increased likelihood of more ultimates being used by the enemy team, Tanks have to be more aware and prepared to counter them in order to protect their team.
Additionally, with the shift to 5v5, Tanks now have the opportunity to take on a more prominent role in the team composition and strategy. The lack of an Off-Tank also means that Tanks have less room for errors as they get punished more easily.
The lack of the 30% ultimate charge bonus for Tanks when they switch heroes also adds an extra layer of strategy, as Tanks have to carefully choose the right moment to use their ultimate abilities.
In response to feedback from players, developer Jared Neuss and the Overwatch 2 team are actively working to enhance the overall gaming experience.
The team has plans to improve player communication, including regular updates and announcements about development and balancing issues. These efforts are aimed at fostering a more transparent and open relationship with the community and addressing the mixed reception the game has received since its release last October.
The team is committed to making adjustments and improvements to ensure that players have the best possible experience while playing Overwatch 2.
