Esports to Challenge Traditional Sports Viewership Numbers by 2020
By Alleef AshaariVerified|December 27, 2018|2 Comments
Is esports a fad or a trend? Is it simply fated to die out in the next couple of years? According to statistics and predictions, the answer is a resounding no. In fact, esports viewership numbers already surpass Major League Baseball in the U.S. By 2022, that number is set to exceed even the likes of NBA and NFL.
According to Goldman Sachs (via Breaking Views), esports viewership numbers are estimated to reach a whopping 276 million by 2022. Revenue is also set to increase three-fold from 2018’s $900 million over the same period of time, thanks to media rights and sponsorship of brands like Coca-Cola and Toyota.
Meanwhile, the leading company spearheading this esports revolution is none other than Tencent. The Chinese games developer/publisher will be backing 2019’s Fortnite World Cup with a record-breaking $100 million, not to mention its juggernaut League of Legends Worlds Championships which drew approximately 200 million viewers worldwide in November 2018.
However, with the Chinese government announcing their plans to regulate the nation’s games industry, the esports climate will surely be affected as well. All of this remains mere speculation as of now, but the future is indeed looking mighty bright for esports.
