EA To Remove Battlefield 1943, Bad Company 1 & 2 & Mirror’s Edge From Digital Storefronts (Update)

Updated at 4.30 am on 22 March 2023:

Several hours after the initial announcement, EA updated their original post to remove Mirror’s Edge from the list of games that will be removed from digital storefronts.

It’s currently unknown if Mirror’s Edge was supposed to be part of it, or if EA saw the online backlash and decided to backpedal their initial decision.

*UPDATE*

EA has made a surprise announcement that they will be delisting and removing several games from digital storefronts, including Battlefield 1943, Battlefield Bad Company, Battlefield Bad Company 2, and Mirror’s Edge. This will come into effect starting from 28 April 2023.

The official statement partially reads:

“Starting April 28 2023, Battlefield 1943, Battlefield Bad Company 1 & 2 and Mirror’s Edge will be removed from digital storefronts and you will no longer be able to purchase them. This is in preparation for the retirement of the online services for these titles which will happen on 8 December 2023.

For Bad Company 1 & 2 and Mirror’s Edge, you can still continue playing them and use their respective offline features, such as the single player campaign. You can also read our FAQ and Service Updates for further information on the retirement of online services.”

This makes for a bad precedent, considering that there’s no reason for EA to make these games unavailable on digital storefronts. This is especially true for games like Mirror’s Edge, which has a single-player story campaign that players can play offline.

It’s strange that EA chose to make this announcement just as Nintendo is shutting down the Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS in March 2023. It’s hard to advocate for a fully digital future if publishers and developers can simply remove games from digital storefronts.
