Korea’s LoL Team For Asian Games Comprises Of Mostly T1 Players

T1, the dominant force in the LCK league, will be heavily represented in South Korea’s national League of Legends team for the upcoming 2022 Asian Games, as revealed by the Korean e-Sports Association (KeSPA) in their announcement on 24 May. This six-man squad will proudly represent the country in Hanghzou, China, during the 19th Asian Games.

T1 takes the lead with three players securing their spots: Choi “Zeus” Woo-je, Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, and Ryu “Keria” Min-seok. JD Gaming, the winners of MSI 2023, followed closely behind, with Seo “Kanavi” Jin-hyeok and Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk making the team. The final player on the roster is Gen.G’s Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon, who will be competing with Faker for playing time, adding an extra layer of anticipation to the team dynamics.

KeSPA’s selection process involved a comprehensive evaluation of players’ performances over the past two years, both in domestic and international competitions, including the recently concluded MSI 2023, as well as considering individual accolades. Eligibility was limited to players who were at least 16 years old as of February 2023 and who competed in one of the four major regions (LCK, LPL, LEC, and LCS).

Leading the national team as coach will be Kim “kkOma” Jeong-gyun, renowned for guiding SK Telecom T1 to consecutive Worlds titles in 2015 and 2016. This marks a significant milestone for esports, as the Asian Games will include official medal events for esports for the first time.

Apart from League of Legends, South Korea will also be fielding national teams in PUBG Mobile, FIFA Online 4, and Street Fighter 5, further showcasing their dedication and prowess across multiple gaming disciplines.

Scheduled to take place from 23 September to 8 October, the 19th Asian Games will be hosted in Hangzhou, China. Originally slated for September 2022, the event had to be postponed due to the global health crisis, making the anticipation for these highly competitive and exhilarating games even greater.
