The first episode of Secret Invasion is now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar Malaysia. I’ll be discussing heavy spoilers so if you haven’t seen it or want to avoid spoilers, now’s your chance to stop reading.
Check out my spoiler-free review of Secret Invasion here. The first season will consist of six episodes.
The synopsis reads:
“In Marvel Studios’ new series ‘Secret Invasion,’ set in the present day MCU, Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.”

Prescod (Richard Dormer) warns Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) of a Skrull conspiracy trying to take over the Earth. However, when Everett says that he’ll bring the plans “that will set the world on fire” to Nick Fury (who is still on the S.A.B.E.R. space station), Prescod suddenly attacks Everett before being shot dead in self-defence.
Later, when Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) chase down Everett, Everett falls from the top of a building before dying, revealing that this Everett Ross is actually a Skrull imposter who is part of the rogue Skrulls.
However, it’s unknown how long that Everett Ross has been a Skrull imposter.
The last time we truly saw the real human Nick Fury was actually in the post-credits of 2018’s Avengers Infinity War calling Captain Marvel to Earth before disappearing in the Blip. He later also appeared in a voiceless cameo in 2019’s Avengers Endgame.
This is because the Nick Fury on Earth in 2019’s Spider-Man Far From Home was actually Talos in disguise. The real Nick Fury was already on the S.A.B.E.R. space station. That means the last time he was on Earth was back in Avengers Endgame when he returned from the Blip.
Soren is the wife of Talos, and we last saw her impersonating Maria Hill in 2019’s Spider-Man Far From Home. In Secret Invasion, Talos reveals to Nick Fury that Soren has passed away.
There’s a lot of quick exposition here but according to Talos, Nick Fury and Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel abandoned the Skrull Council, whom they previously promised to help after the events of 2019’s Captain Marvel (which was set in the 90s). Now, a rogue Skrull named Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), who is part of the Skrull Council, wants revenge and he is also recruiting Skrulls to his cause, which seems to be taking over the Earth.
Gravik’s plan is apparently to use a bomb to spark a war between the USA and Russia, which will wipe out humanity. Skrulls are immune to radioactivity so they can survive in a nuclear wasteland.
The President considers Nick Fury and Maria Hill AWOL (absent without official leave but without intent to desert), and tasks James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes (Don Cheadle) to track them down.
Nick Fury finds himself kidnapped by Agent Sonya Falsworth (Olivia Colman), who is an MI6 agent and a friend of Nick Fury. She wants to assess Nick Fury’s current condition because she’s not convinced that this older and more broken Nick Fury is capable of defeating the Skrull threat.
We meet G’iah (Emilia Clarke), the daughter of Talos and Soren, for the first time as she welcomes a new Skrull to a place called New Skrullos. Skrullos was the name of the home planet of the Skrulls. New Skrullos seems to be a refuge for Skrulls on Earth, located near an abandoned power plant in Russia.
It’s also the home of the rogue Skrull rebellion led by Gravik, and it looks like G’iah is one of them. G’iah mentions that there are 500 Skrulls at New Skrullos but not all of them are warriors.
The rogue Skrulls are kidnapping people and impersonating them, stealing their faces. They also keep repeating “Home In Our Own Skin”, which means they probably want to take over the world so that they can once again live as Skrulls without having to disguise their true selves or skins.
When asked by Maria Hill about why he abandoned Earth, Nick Fury said that it was because of a “crisis of faith”. After this scene, Nick Fury is reminded of when he turned to dust due to the Blip. Perhaps it’s true what both Maria and Sonya said, that he’s changed after the Blip, and that he’s pretty much broken after the traumatic events of the Blip.
Gravik was somehow caused the death of Soren, either directly or indirectly.
In a shocking turn of events, Gravik activates the three bombs and kills Maria Hill by shooting her while impersonating Nick Fury.
No other Marvel Cinematic Universe series on Disney+ has killed off a major (somewhat major) character before in its very first episode. This will probably be viral soon. RIP Maria Hill.
Until the next episode, excelsior!
