Pokémon Go Dev Niantic Lays Off 230 Employees, Cancels Their Marvel Game
It looks like things aren’t going great for Niantic, the AR-focused developer best known for launching the global hit Pokémon Go in 2016. In a new post, they announced that they’re laying off a whopping 230 employees and closing down their LA studio. They are also stopping support for NBA All-World and cancelling their upcoming game, Marvel World Of Heroes.
However, Niantic will continue to support Pokémon Go, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, and its recently released Peridot.
Marvel World Of Heroes was originally announced during the Disney & Marvel Games Showcase at D23 in September 2022. Unfortunately, that announcement came only months after it was reported that Niantic was forced to lay off its employees and cancel projects in June 2022.
Niantic was founded 2010 and was originally best known for its location-based community game Ingress. However, they went big when Pokémon Go launched in 2016, which has since garnered a whopping US$6 billion in lifetime revenue. Their other games post-Pokémon Go, like Harry Potter Wizards Unite and Pikmin Bloom have pretty much flopped.
