Malaysia Embraces Esports Excellence As ESL One Returns With Dota 2 Tournament In Kuala Lumpur

During a joint ceremony with ESL, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) celebrated the return of the globally renowned ESL One tournament to Malaysia.

This aligns with their goal of establishing the country as the esports hub of Southeast Asia. YB Tuan Adam Adli, the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, conducted a site visit at the venue of ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023, held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Center (MITEC) today.

Joining him were YB Puan Michelle Ng Mei Sze, Ahmed Faris Amir (CEO of Esports Integrated), Caitlin Kang (Managing Director of ESL Malaysia), Eugene Hong (Senior Project Manager of ESL One), and JB Hewitt (Managing Director of ESL Asia-Pacific Japan).

This year marks the fourth edition of the international Dota 2 tournament in Malaysia, taking place at MITEC from 11 to 17 December, with 12 of the world’s best Dota teams competing for one of six spots in the live Playoffs and a prize pool of US$1 million (RM4.6 million).

During the walkabout event, YB Tuan Adam Adli highlighted that under the “KBS Sports Development Strategic Plan 2020-2025,” the ministry is focusing on fostering a sustainable sports ecosystem at all levels. This involves investing in infrastructure and talent development, as well as organizing regional and international events in Malaysia, such as ESL One.

Emphasizing the aspiration to make Malaysia an esports powerhouse in Southeast Asia, he invited more world-class esports events to choose Malaysia as the host for their leagues and tournaments, aiming to stimulate continuous and sustainable growth in the esports industry.

Caitlin Kang, Managing Director of ESL Malaysia at ESL FACEIT Group, expressed delight in showcasing the world’s best Dota 2 teams to fans in Malaysia and the region. With a US$1,000,000 prize pool this year and a more accessible location, ESL is ready to welcome thousands of Dota 2 fans to Kuala Lumpur over the weekend, building on the legacy of ESL One in Malaysia.
