Dota 2 ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023 – Day 5: Gaimin Gladiators & Team Liquid Secure Top Spots
By Lewis "lickety" Larcombe|December 16, 2023|0 Comment
After the second-to-last day of ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023, only three teams are left in the final major Dota 2 tournament of the year. Gaimin Gladiators, who were the runners-up at The International 2023, earned their spot in the Grand Finals by defeating China’s Azure Ray in the upper bracket finals. Simultaneously, Team Liquid secured the third position by sweeping Eastern Europe’s BetBoom Team, who had previously defeated China’s G2.iG.
In the lower bracket quarterfinals, BetBoom Team decisively eliminated G2.iG in two consecutive games. BetBoom took control of the early game and secured comfortable victories in both matches. The first game featured Ivan “Pure” Moskalenko on Axe and Egor “Nightfall” Grigorenko on Terrorblade, leading BetBoom to victory. In the second game, BetBoom continued their dominance, finishing with a 30-7 kill lead.
Moving to the upper bracket finals, Gaimin Gladiators outclassed Azure Ray in two games, each lasting less than 30 minutes. In the first game, a surprising mid Slardar pick for Quinn “Quinn” Callahan set the tone for Gaimin Gladiators’ dominance. The second game, featuring Gaimin Gladiators’ Alchemist pick, further solidified their superiority with a 33-11 kill lead.
In the lower bracket semifinals, Team Liquid secured a spot in the Top 3 by sweeping BetBoom Team. Stand-in offlaner Jonas “SabeRLight-” Volek played a crucial role in both games, leading Team Liquid to victory. The first game was a back-and-forth battle, with SabeRLight on Mars contributing nine kills. In the second game, Liquid gained an early lead and maintained it throughout, securing a 2-0 series sweep.
With these outcomes, Gaimin Gladiators have guaranteed at least a second-place finish and a prize of US$175,000, with their eyes set on the US$300,000 grand prize. Azure Ray and Team Liquid secured at least third place, each earning US$120,000. BetBoom Team finished in fourth place with US$85,000, while G2.iG exited in 5th-6th place with US$57,500 in consolation.
