Madame Web: Who Is Cassandra Webb & The Three Spider-Women?
Madame Web is the next movie in Sony Pictures’ Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which consists of other movies such as the first two Venom movies and Morbius (our review here).
Madame Web will premiere in Malaysian cinemas on 15 February 2024.
The synopsis reads:
“Meanwhile, in another universe…”
In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.
There are four main characters in Madame Web, three of whom are Spider-Women. None of them have ever had live-action versions before, so this will be their official live-action debut.
With that, here’s a simple introduction to these four protagonists of Madame Web before you catch them in cinemas later this month:
In the comics, Madame Web first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #210 (November 1980) and she was a clairvoyant mutant who could see the future. She’s been deceased in the comics for a while now, but she was known to be a mentor to Spider-Man and the other Spider Totems in the Marvel Universe, guiding them with her powers.
Where is the source of her powers? It’s from the Web Of Life And Destiny.
The Web Of Life And Destiny is an important concept in the Marvel Universe, it’s like a representation or construct of the Multiverse that’s exclusive to the Spider-Totems, which also allows them to more easily travel between universes. The Spider-Totems are essentially the avatars of the Web Of Life And Destiny. In each universe, there’s at least one Spider-Totem. For example, Earth-616 has multiple, including Peter Parker Spider-Man, Miles Morales Spider-Man and the various Spider-Women.
In the movie version (Madame Web), it seems like Dakota Johnson’s Cassandra Webb will unlock her precognitive powers and will have to protect several Spider-Women or Spider-Totems from behind hunted down by a villain named Ezekiel Simms.
In the comics, Julia Carpenter was actually only the second person to become Spider-Woman (the first and original Spider-Woman was Jessica Drew, who remains the most popular and iconic). She’s been part of superhero teams like Avengers West Coast and Force Works.
How did she get her powers?
It’s not from a spider bite. Instead, Julia Carpenter was injected with a mix of spider venom and exotic plant extracts. She has the usual super strength and agility, but what makes her unique is her ability to psychokinetic energy or psionic energy. Psi-webs or psychic webs, to put it simply. She doesn’t have the normal Spider-Man webbing.
Now, after the death of the original Madame Web (Cassandra Webb), she is now the current Madame Web in the comics.
That might also happen in the movie version of the character eventually.
This is what she looks like as Madame Web:
This one is perhaps the most obscure character on this list. In the comics, Mattie Franklin was the third person to be Spider-Woman after Jessica Drew and Julia Carpenter. She’s also the niece of J. Jonah Jameson.
Unlike Spider-Man and the previous Spider-Women, Mattie Franklin got her powers through unconventional means; magic. Through a magical ritual called the Gathering Of Five, she got powers; the usual super strength, agility, etc. What makes her different is that she later gains bio-web/psi-web powers similar to the previous two Spider-Women and also spider-legs as part of her costume.
In the movie version, Mattie Franklin is confirmed to have her spider legs just like her comics counterpart.
Anya Corazon is the newest character to debut in the comics of all the Spider-Women on this list; Amazing Fantasy #1 (August 2004). However, she’s still more well-known than Mattie Franklin and that’s because she has her own identity separate from being a Spider-Woman and a unique origin.
In the comics, Anya Corazon is caught in a skirmish between two mystical clans, the Spider Society and the Sisterhood Of The Wasp, which causes her to be wounded. To save her life, a mage named Miguel Legar gave her a spider-shaped tattoo that gave her mystical spider powers. Besides the usual super strength, she had the ability to project an exoskeleton (but she later lost it) and she doesn’t use webs like the other Spider-People. Instead, she uses grappling hooks and whip-like weapons like bolas.
Another unique trait is that she has never gone by as a Spider-Woman. She has previously gone by as either Spider-Girl or Arana (which is the Spanish word for spiders).
