Madame Web: Will These Other Spider-Women Cameo Or Show Up?
By Alleef Ashaari|February 5, 2024|0 Comment
Madame Web is the next movie in Sony Pictures’ Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which consists of other movies such as the first two Venom movies and Morbius (our review here).
Madame Web will premiere in Malaysian cinemas on 15 February 2024.
The synopsis reads:
“Meanwhile, in another universe…”
In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.
We already know who’s going to be in Madame Web but there are many other Spider-Women alongside the four already being featured in the movie.
Let’s check out some of them below. Who knows? They might suddenly make a cameo or get an easter egg in Madame Web.
In the comics, Jessica Drew debuted in 1977 and she was the original Spider-Woman. However, she got her powers very differently from Peter Parker Spider-Man.
After her mother, pregnant with Jessica, was struck with a beam of radiation containing the DNA of several different types of spiders, Jessica Drew developed superhuman powers patterned after several different types of spiders when she was born. Jessica has superhuman strength but she can also fly.
What makes her unique is that she can exude a high concentration of pheromones that elicit pleasure and attraction from others, as well as produce bio-electrical energy AKA bio-webs. It’s often referred to as venom blasts.
Jessica Drew is the most iconic Spider-Woman and she’s one of the only Spider-Women who has recently gotten frequent solo comics (besides Silk but more on her later). She’s also been part of the Avengers and is best friends with Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel in the comics.
It would be nice to see the Madame Web movie at least acknowledge her in some way (easter eggs, etc.), since she was the first Spider-Woman.
In the comics, Mayday Parker is from an alternate universe and not Earth-616 but she is still one of the more popular Spider-Girls. She made her debut in What If #105 (February 1998).
In her universe, May “Mayday” Parker is the daughter of Peter and Mary Jane Parker. She basically inherits the same powers from her father and replaces him after he retires.
It would be a nice easter egg to see her show up or receive a reference in Madame Web.
This is another alternate universe character not from Earth-616 but this is a version of Mary Jane who marries Peter in her universe and becomes her own superhero after getting powers via a suit that copies or emulates her husband’s powers. They also have a daughter together (more on her later).
She made her debut in Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #1 (June, 2015) and has been a fan-favourite ever since, especially because she has her own unique superhero name and not just Spider-Woman.
Anna-May Parker is the daughter of Peter and Mary Jane Parker in her universe, which is the same universe as Spinneret (see above). Unlike Mary Jane, she naturally has powers because she inherited them from her father, just like Mayday Parker (who is also the daughter of another version of Peter and Mary Jane Parker but from another universe).
What makes Spiderling even more powerful than her father is that her Spider Sense can sometimes predict the future and she is one of the special Spider-Totems. As the Patternmaker, she can manipulate the Web Of Life And Destiny.
If you count her as a Spider-Woman, then Cindy Moon AKA Silk is the newest and most recent Spider-Woman on Earh-616 in the comics. She made her debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (April 2014).
Her origins are quite convoluted. Cindy Moon is the daughter of scientists Albert Moon Sr. and Nari Moon and the sister of Albert Moon Jr. She then gets bit by a radioactive spider just like Peter Parker but then gets imprisoned by Ezekiel Simms inside a bunker for a whopping seven years to protect her from Morlun and the Inheritors, who are enemies of Spider-Totems (the Spider-People).
Her Spider-Sense is more powerful than Peter’s and she can shoot webs from her fingertips. She is already a fan favourite and has already appeared in video game form in 2023’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
I don’t think this one really needs much introduction now, but let’s just add her for the sake of it. She’s arguably the most well-known Spider-Person now besides Peter Parker and Miles Morales, and that’s all thanks to Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse (2018) and Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse (2023).
In her universe, she is the main Spider-Totem because her version of Peter Parker never became Spider-Man. She then becomes Ghost Spider or Spider-Woman but fans still like to refer to her as Spider-Gwen so that name has stuck to her even to this day.
The biggest fan service moment Madame Web could achieve (well, besides just having Spider-Man himself appear) is to introduce a live-action version of Spider-Gwen.
