Happy International Women’s Day! Today, we celebrate the achievements and contributions of women around the world. To honour the occasion, we take a look at some of the most iconic female characters in video games that have captured our hearts and imaginations. These characters have broken stereotypes and challenged the gaming industry, paving the way for more diverse and inclusive narratives.
Samus Aran, a renowned bounty hunter and Galactic Federation soldier has gained recognition for her exceptional combat abilities and remarkable agility. She made her first appearance in the 1986 Metroid game, shocking players with her unexpected reveal as a female character at the end of the game. Beyond her physical prowess, Samus possesses an enigmatic personality, embodying the characteristics of a hero of few words. Despite her remarkable achievements, she tends to maintain a quiet and brooding demeanour, reflecting her dedication to maintaining peace throughout the galaxy.
Samus’ primary adversaries are the Space Pirates, particularly the formidable Ridley, who is personally responsible for the death of her mother. This tragic origin has only served to intensify her resolve, as she has demonstrated an unparalleled level of willpower and resourcefulness. Samus has accomplished what thousands have failed to achieve, stopping at nothing to safeguard the galaxy against any potential threats that may arise.
Her unwavering determination and unwavering commitment to justice have made her a symbol of strength and resilience. Samus Aran’s journey continues to inspire fans, defying expectations and overcoming insurmountable odds in her relentless pursuit of justice and peace in the vast expanse of the galaxy.
Lara Croft has become synonymous with the action-adventure genre, inspiring players since her debut in 1996. The Tomb Raider series, developed by Crystal Dynamics, has showcased Lara’s evolution from an intelligent, athletic archaeologist to a resilient survivor. Armed with her iconic dual pistols and sharp intellect, Lara fearlessly explores ancient tombs, solves intricate puzzles, and battles enemies to uncover long-lost treasures.
The role of Lara Croft has been portrayed by two Hollywood icons: Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. Jolie, an Oscar winner, brought the character to life in the iconic film adaptations, while Vikander portrayed Lara in the 2018 reboot. Both actresses brought their own interpretation to the role, showcasing Lara’s strength and determination.
In 2018, Lara Croft was inducted into the Strong Museum’s “World Video Game Hall of Fame,” solidifying her status as a gaming legend. This accolade is a testament to her enduring popularity and impact on the gaming world. Lara Croft has solidified her position as one of the most iconic female characters and influential figures in the gaming industry.
Sonya Blade was first introduced in the 1992 Mortal Kombat video game as the sole female character in the fighting roster. Initially, her character portrayal depicted her as a typical damsel in distress. However, as the series progressed, Sonya began to depart significantly from this archetype and emerged as General of the Earthrealm Special Forces.
Sonya has been brought to life by talented actresses over the years. One of the most memorable portrayals came from Kerri Hoskins, who made her debut in the 1995 Mortal Kombat 3 movie. 25 years later, Kerri surprised fans by donning the costume once again, giving everyone a glimpse into how Sonya Blade might look if she was 50 years old. Fans were amazed to see her effortlessly slip into the role of the seasoned warrior, showcasing her timeless appeal.
Over time, Sonya’s skills and dedication caught the attention of Raiden, a powerful deity who selects a group of warriors to protect Earthrealm from threats. Sonya’s impressive abilities earned her a place among Raiden’s Chosen Warriors, a group of individuals tasked with safeguarding the world. Her growth is a testament to the depth and complexity of her character, making her a cherished and beloved figure in the gaming community.
Who said a witch can’t be a total badass? Bayonetta, the protagonist of the 2009 original game developed by PlatinumGames and published by Sega, shattered this stereotype. Her backstory served as an inspiration to women, showcasing her ability to fight and survive against all odds.
Bayonetta was born as Cereza, the forbidden child of a Lumen Sage and an Umbra Witch. This union caused a significant rift between the two clans due to a tenet that claimed: “The intersection of light and darkness will bring calamity to this earth.” As a result, her father was exiled and her mother was imprisoned.
Despite facing numerous challenges and being betrayed by her close friend, Bayonetta’s memories were wiped away and she was sealed away for 500 years. However, she remained unwavering in her determination to dedicate her life to slaying angels and reclaiming her memories.
Bayonetta is undeniably powerful, possessing incredible agility and being recognized as one of the most powerful female characters in video games.
Princess Peach, the iconic female character of the Super Mario franchise, has been a fan favourite since her introduction in the original Super Mario Bros. game in 1985. While she is often portrayed as the damsel in distress, Peach has showcased her intelligence, resourcefulness, and independence. She rules the Mushroom Kingdom with kindness and compassion and has been featured in numerous Mario games.
Peach’s popularity extends beyond the Mario franchise, as she has made appearances in other video titles, including Super Smash Bros. and her own upcoming game, Princess Peach: Showtime! In it, Peach assumes various personas and embarks on a mission to stop a devious duo from causing chaos at Sparkle Theater’s stage productions.
Through her portrayal in the Mario games, Peach has effectively proven that being feminine does not mean being weak. Her ability to hold her own against formidable foes, such as Bowser, has won her the admiration of players and women worldwide.
Known as a world-champion esports star, Hana Song really is one of us! She goes by her screen name D.Va mostly! A gamer at heart who was recruited by the Mobile Exo-Force of the Korean Army (MEKA) when South Korea was attacked by a colossal omnic monstrosity. D.Va was recruited for her fast reflexes and skills to pilot a mech. Later, she eventually starts streaming her combat operations to her fans and it’s turned her into a global icon!
Although she is young, she is very competent in combat, never giving up nor showing mercy to her adversaries. The best part about her is that every gamer can relate to her. She often talks smack to her opponents in battle, but at the same time is super cheerful to her teammates. On the battlefield, she uses a lot of gamer terms, like “nerf,” “pocket healer,” “GG,” “AFK,” and more.
What makes her iconic, is she’s a symbol of hope to many other women gamers in real life. In South Korea, a women’s association called “for D.Va” was formed to discuss and promote gender equality within the gaming scene. They’re often seen at women’s marches and all other kinds of events. D.Va shows that women CAN thrive in the male-dominated gaming culture despite their gender.
The popular FPS Battle Royale, Apex Legends, has one of the most diverse casts in video games, constantly representing marginalized identities. Season 15 brought about the first-ever trans character to the roster, Catalyst or Tressa Smith. Respawn was brave, highlighting her story in Stories from the Outlands trailer that openly referenced her transition. Instead of focusing on her story mid-transition, Respawn focused on her story after she successfully transitioned and established a better life for herself.
‘Everyone deserves a chance to rise’. A voiceline Catalyst says that really shows her personality. She’s always shown as a person who is ready to help her friends and stick up for them whenever they need it. A ‘techno witch’ ready to win the Apex Games to help her family. She’s very loyal to her friends as shown in plenty of stories from the outlands.
She rose to fame in the game, also becoming one of the meta legends to play, and became a popular pick in the Apex Legends Global Series. Having trans representation out in a game as big as Apex Legends is something big for the LGBTQ+ community and hopefully, more AAA games will continue to be inclusive.
One of the most iconic female characters of the past few decades. Whose crush, wasn’t she? A brawler bartender well-loved by both men and women alike. Don’t let her endearing personality fool you, she is a fierce fighter on her own. Her personality shows a great mix of both strength and vulnerability. She is also shown as very motherly, often spending most of her time worrying and caring about others rather than looking after her own self.
Her impact on the Final Fantasy community goes far beyond her role in video games. She has become an influential figure for cosplayers, fan art creations, as well as fans demanding her own game.
Chun-Li is not just Street Fighter’s poster girl, but also Capcom’s, and there is a reason why she’s an icon that stands the test of time. Her design is iconic and even though she’s had minimal changes from game to game, her character stays iconic. Known as the First Lady of Fighting Games, and a pioneer of her field, how could she not make this list?
Her fighting style is also one of the most popular picks. Her rapid-fire kicks look awesome along with her iconic fireball poses.
On this special day and month, we celebrate the iconic female characters who have broken barriers and paved the way for more representation in the gaming industry. These characters have not only entertained gamers but also inspired them, showcasing that women are capable and powerful individuals who have a rightful place in the world of gaming. As we move forward, let’s continue to support and celebrate the contributions of women in the gaming industry, ensuring a future where diverse and relatable female protagonists are the norm.
