Is The Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy Officially Console-Exclusive To PlayStation? [Update]

Updated on 7 March 2024 at 5.50am GMT+8:

The writer of the original source article, Gene Park, has posted on Twitter clarifying that he made a mistake and that the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy is NOT yet confirmed to be a console exclusive for Sony PlayStation.

If there was any doubt that the new Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy will stay exclusive and not go multiplatform, they’re put to rest by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

In a recent Washington Post interview, Sony Interactive Entertainment vice president of second/third party content Christian Svensson officially announced that the FFVII Remake trilogy will be console-exclusive to PlayStation. Securing the remake trilogy is part of recognizing the importance of the original 1997 title it’s based on.

“Back in that same console generation for the original PlayStation, Sony Computer Entertainment had few franchises of its own, and in order to find its place in a very competitive video game industry, we sought to win the hearts and minds of key third-party developers like Square.

That focus on third-party partnerships is “ingrained in our DNA to this day”, and connects directly to how we’ve worked together [with Square Enix] on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Final Fantasy has always been one of the primary franchise pillars on PlayStation consoles. [Square Enix is] one of the best in the business at pushing beyond their fans’ lofty expectations and showing off what can be done with PlayStation hardware”

In addition, having it on a single platform means an easier time to focus on building the world of FFVII without loading screen interruptions, at least according to the trilogy’s producer Yoshinori Kitase (who directed the original game).

“Had it not been on a single platform, the world map would not be seamless, and game design may have had to regress significantly.”

So what’s next for the trilogy? The third game will feature the Highwind airship, according to the game’s director Naoki Hamaguchi. While much of the work for the third game is done thanks to the worldbuilding set up by Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the team will need to accommodate the airship with the game world for part 3.

I don’t know why needs to be said, but exclusive games sell consoles. You can’t move your boxes & machines if you don’t have great games exclusive to it. Keeping the FFVII trilogy (or any great game really) to just one console just makes the PS5 all the more enticing to buy; it’s just business sense. The third game in the trilogy has no release date, but we do know it’ll only be on the PlayStation 5. Or 6. Who knows?
