Support Studios for Two Major FPS Franchises Suffer First Layoffs in 17 Years

Halo Infinite and Call of Duty support studio Certain Affinity had made a statement on the developer’s website on the unfortunate news that the company has made its first layoffs in its 17-year history in the gaming industry.

The Texas-based studio has announced that 25 employees from its expansive workforce of over 250 individuals have been affected, representing approximately 10% of the company.

According to the website post, this reduction in staff is solely attributed to an industry-wide slowdown in the funding of new lead and co-development projects. Furthermore, Certain Affinity’s founder and CEO, Max Hoberman, revealed that there have also been external factors at play. Specifically, a reluctance among third-party investors to fund games or game companies has further exacerbated the situation.

Check out the full message:

“Over the past 12 months the game industry has faced unprecedented challenges. We are no exception. Today we made the extremely difficult decision to inform 25 of our US-based employees that their jobs are being eliminated. This has the most impact on the teams running our business operations.

There are multiple factors underlying this decision to do a layoff for the first time in our 17+ year history. Most significant is an industry-wide slow down in the funding of new lead and co-development projects and the reluctance of third party investors to fund games or game companies. This has made it exceptionally difficult to sign new work or secure other forms of funding.

Our current focus is on our team and the well-being of those most impacted, whom we are supporting with severance pay and benefits continuation. We are also making their vested awards under our Stock Equity Plan portable so they may benefit from the company’s success in the future.

We have built an amazing culture where we all come together to support one another in times of need. We ask for your understanding and patience while we navigate this unprecedented event. Thank you.”

Certain Affinity has contributed to the development of several notable titles over the past 17 years. These projects include assisting successful franchises such as Halo and Call of Duty. Additionally, Certain Affinity has contributed to other notable projects, including Prey (2017), Gotham Knights, Doom (2016), Left 4 Dead, and Hogwarts Legacy.

The latest wave of game industry layoffs shows no signs of slowing down. This month, prominent companies such as Supermassive Games and Activision Blizzard have also announced job cuts.
