Valve has implemented significant changes to its refund policy for games that were purchased before their official release dates on the Steam platform. The policy, effective immediately, takes into account a more nuanced approach to refunds, particularly those related to Early Access and Advanced Access titles.

The company announced that games played in Early Access or Advanced Access will now be included in the 2-hour refund limit. This means that players who purchase such titles will have access to the same refund policy as those who purchase games after their official launch dates.

The new policy stated:

“When you purchase a title on Steam prior to the release date, the two-hour playtime limit for refunds will apply (except for beta testing), but the 14-day period for refunds will not start until the release date. For example, if you purchase a game that is in Early Access or Advanced Access, any playtime will count against the two-hour refund limit. If you pre-purchase a title which is not playable prior to the release date, you can request a refund at any time prior to release of that title, and the standard 14-day/two-hour refund period will apply starting on the game’s release date.”

The adjustment made ensures that players remain conscious of their playtime, particularly during pre-release stages when games may still be undergoing development and refinement.

What’s more, is that Valve has modified the start date of the refund eligibility period. Unlike previously, when the 14-day refund window started at the time of purchase, it has now been revised to take effect only upon the game’s official release date. This will allow players to make an informed decision about their purchase without feeling pressured.
