Diablo 4 Season 4: Tempering & Masterworks Guide
Diablo 4’s newest Season is available now. Titled Loot Reborn, Season 4 will shake up the way you level up and power up the gear and weaponry you amass in this loot-hoarding action RPG.
Diablo 4 Season 4 introduces two new crafting systems to replace the current one: Tempering and Masterworking. Here’s a breakdown of both of them.
Tempering in Diablo 4 is a new way to upgrade your gear and customize it as you see fit. Basically, you select a gear you want to Temper, select the Tempering Recipe, and then supply the materials to get the Blacksmith to upgrade it to your liking. You can reroll Tempering Affixes up to 5 times if you are unhappy with the random results.
Tempering requires Tempering Manuals, new items that are exclusive to Diablo 4 Season 4. To get these, just kill monsters and open Helltide chests in Helltide areas, as well as help out the Iron Wolves while they’re in Helltides. Here are the Tempering Manual tier list:
As if that isn’t enough, you’ll be guaranteed a brand-new Tempering Manual at level 50 via a Priority Quest called “Tempering” at Kyovashad’s Blacksmith.
Tempering is divided into six categories:
Most items can only have a single Tempering Affixes. Ancestral Items can have TWO Tempering Affixes. Speaking of items, here are the Tempering affixes for each item and gear type:
Tempering costs at the Blacksmith include:
The amount and type are dependent on the Item Power and equipment. The more powerful the gear, the more materials it needs.
Masterworking is the endgame system available at the Blacksmith that allows you to power up the quality of your affixes, including Tempering Affixes. The reason it’s an endgame feature for Season 4 is because the materials required can only be found in the Pit of Artificers which is only accessible when your character is at level 100.
The following materials for Masterworking are as follows:
Higher ranks have higher material costs. In addition to the rare materials listed above, Masterworking requires other materials such as:
You should have a ton of these from your level 1 to level 100 levelling-up journey.
Masterworking bonuses increase by +5% at early levels, but rise up dramatically for on one random affix at level 8 and level 12.
A single affix can receive the Master Work Critical bonus multiple times. At Rank 12, an affix has the following total bonus, depending on how many times it received a Master Work Critical Bonus.
You can reset an item’s Masterworking Ranks. It’s best to do the rest at Rank 4 if you didn’t get the proc and MW Critical bonus you want. Doing it at higher ranks is costly and not recommended.
